Being a Ca native... I had Indian, Chinese, Afro American, Mexican, Ummmm maybe Iranian neighbors. Not sure did not ask them. As bad a rap Californians have...ya know I don't remember burning any crosses in the front yard. I seem to remember getting invited to a few BBQ's. I did not harass nor give dirty looks to OBVIOUS non locals in my almost Mtn city!
Since being in S Oregon I have run into many cool people/helpful people. Sad to read the rest of these stories. Maybe looks do count? Thank you Lord! Deal is I don't see calif people who are probably other transplants Jamming. I also would suspect if you Bitter Or few ever went to Ca would we run you off? Not to mention would you ever leave Ca once there? I am Not gonna get my sweet panties in a ruffle over the Neg. that breeds here over this subject. I will just count my Calif rear end Lucky I am GLADLY received most every where I have been! Calif license plate included! RooHaaw |

I know this is probably nothing to do with this post but in a way it is. I moved from another continent 6 years ago, and have lived in California the whole time. I have struggled to adapt to the immensely fast pace of life and can't keep it up. I have thought about Oregon, and may seriously consider it as a place to move to. I prefer the slower pace of life that doesn't get cluttered with all the bells and whistles of busy city life. Don't get me wrong, nothing with that either. Just that with life being hectic and on the go 24/7 in bigger cities sometimes a breath of fresh air is all that is needed to slow down and enjoy life once again. Everybody came from somewhere and ended up someplace. Singling out folks from CA isn't really fair. People with wealth and material goodies can originate from any place, and should by right of freedom be able to live where they desire as long as they are law abiding and peaceful in their endeavors.
Some of the nicest people often do come from places least expected. Great friendship can be developed in time, and no one will have their way of life disrupted - that only happens if you let it. Within my consideration is the question of race...hearing about folks being conservative in some parts raised a question which preempted me to start a thread related to an ethnic couple moving to Grants Pass. White hubby and 100% ethnic African wife. This hasn't been an issue in CA at all, or some of the other places we have visited of course with caution...but knowing how protective some folks are - any thoughts on a couple of this stature facing difficulties in a tiny town like Grants Pass? My apologies for piggy-backing off this thread, but felt my comments to be valid and provoking... Thank you all, ![]() |

I am of the firm belief that pace of life is relevant and relative to age. I moved to Southern Cal when I was 23 and fresh out of college. I could handle it then. I stayed about eight years. As I approached thirty I found that my definition of happiness had changed and I didn't give a crap about Hollywood, beaches, tans, sunshine, nightlife. I wanted something different so I returned to Oregon.
I think this is something worth considering for people of all ages. And if you're thinking of moving to a slower pace, determine "How slow"? If you move from an urban area in California to a town of 3,000 out in the boondocks of the PNW or anywhere, don't expect to find Crate and Barrel, Home Depot or even Starbucks. Don't expect people to be up on the New York Times, buying prosciuttto or eating brie. Unless you REALLY want that, you might be better off in the more urban areas. Remember, a slow pace can really be a slooooooooow pace sometimes. |
