Earthquake insurance

Looks like you need to specifically ask for coverage for tsunami...as many insurances do not cover it, even if caused by an earthquake, that they DO cover for.

How old is your house? Insurers vary on how old a house they will insure for earthquakes and some won't insure houses that haven't had earthquake retrofitting done.

We had to prove (by re-opening the drywall) to a licensed inspector that the house had been retrofitted and the frame was bolted to the foundation in a couple locations. This house was built in 1950.

On that ins. page link, looks like many companies are now requiring house inspections before insuring.

I am reading a book by one of my favorite Oregon authors Bonnie Henderson called The Next Tsunami.

I admit that at the beginning of the book I began to feel really freaked out and I actually cancelled a camping trip we had planned for the coast!

But the more you read... the more you realize... preparation is the real key here. Knowledge and preparation. Excessive worry never helped anybody.

Anyway - I highly recommend this very enlightening and informative book to anyone fascinated or concerned about "the big one". http://www.amazon.com/The-Next-Tsuna.../dp/0870717324
