I have been wanting to move to Oregon for some time, but I'm not sure what areas I should look in. I will probably start out in an apartment. I work from home so commute isn't an issue. I don't want to live in a huge metro area, but I do want to be close to outdoor activities. Looking for a laid back area full of animal lovers and crunchy people.

Any suggestions?

Everything is close to outdoors in Oregon. Crunchy=Eugene.

I would suggest looking at Eugene, Bend, or Medford/Ashland.

Eugene: Has Univ. of Oregon. Population about 150,000. South end of Willamette Valley. Only about an hour to the coast. Plenty of crunchiness.

Bend: High desert. Population about 100,000. Close to ski resorts. East of the Cascades so you get less rain and more sunny days but colder and snowier in the winter.

Medford: Far southern Oregon. Population about 80,000. Warmer in the summer but less rain in the winter. About an hour and a half to Crater Lake. Even closer to tons of hiking/camping opportunities. About 20 mins. to Ashland, a small, liberal college town that has the Shakespeare Festival and practically defines crunchy. Very dog friendly.

Eugene is your best bet for crunchy. Ashland is also crunchy but in a more sophisticated way. Eugene is crunchy in a university town way.

Thanks everyone for your input. I hope to make a trip out there soon, to look around, now at least I have some idea where to start.

Hmm...interesting. I see what you're saying, but I would tweak it a bit and say that Ashland is more of a condensed version of South Eugene/UO.

Ashland doesn't really have the equivalent of a West Eugene, sure, but that's partly because it has Talent/Phoenix/Medford just up the road to fill that role.

Eugene is going to be greener, and larger (with a wider variety of things to do). It's also in my experience easier to rely on bike/public transport as the means of conveyance.

Medford. Beautiful outdoors. The summers are hot, but unlike Atlanta, they aren't humid, so you should be fine. Winters are probably about the same as Atlanta for the most part, and snowfall totals are about the same too.

One big difference is much, much, less thunderstorms in OR than there is in GA. And no tropical storms and hurricanes.
