Hello Forum,
I have a question with regard to interracial marriage and living in Grants Pass: If a mixed couple were to relocate to Grants Pass would this be an issue within the community? Some threads have indicated that Grants Pass is very very conservative...that said, how accepting would this town be? Sure there are going to be issues here and there, but generally has anyone had any issues or experience with the above? Thank you for your replies. ![]() |

Appreciate your input - moving is a big deal, and arriving in a place where you are not welcome could be very disheartening...good to know there are 'others' there and that no issues have arisen....

Where is Grant's Pass exactly? And, more to the point, what are the races involved?! I've heard it too many times to be mere coincidence that the eastern cities of Oregon and Washington are far more conservative than the western ones and that the majority of the overt racial tension is between blacks and whites. It also almost goes without saying that larger cosmopolitan people centers like the Portland Metro area or the Seattle/Puget Sound area will be more amenable to a mixed race couple's presence than a smaller town where you 'might' be accepted if one or both of you has always lived in the area but will be treated badly at times if both are newcomers. FWIW

I haven't seen a problem. The younger people here are much more tolerant than of course the older generations. I'm asian, married to a white man, and I've had a few people come up to me and ask me questions or say something stupid, but, just take it with a grain of salt, who cares?! If someone says something ignorant, that's just what you take it as - a comment from an ignorant fool. Some people may say it all depends on what races are involved in an interracial marriage, I say, what does it matter. As long as you and your significant other are happy, don't let other people's opinions make your decisions. Do what you feel is best and don't let others get in the way - that's how I roll anyways!

Hmmm, Conservative? I've lived all over the USA, and the "red" parts seem to be where you'll more likely find people who mind their own biz, more live and let live. Granted, I'm sure a mixed race couple may not go over well in small town Alabama, but I also live in a fairly conservative part of Oregon, and never see any issues. My wife is native American and I have a Latino son.

My parents are a mixed couple (Mexican and White) and have lived here for over 25 years, and my mother only had problems with remarks about her non-white ethnicity once and that was back in the 80s. An interracial marriage is really not a problem here and race, for the most part, hasn't been an issue for years.

OK--it really does depend on the races involved. I've seen a LOT more aggression towards black/white couples than towards any other combination, especially when it's a white female with a black male. That's just my observation. I've been in several interracial relationships, and in fact I'm the product of one, but I was very surprised when my Jamaican friend recounted how much bigotry he encountered when he dated a white French girl. We lived in the same area--but his relationship got a lot more dirty looks and worse than any of mine ever did.
