In case some people have not made the connection...

There are just plain a whole lot more people in the world these days.

They have to go somewhere.

ZPG never happened except maybe in a few isolated northern Europe countries, and the world more than compensated for the places that hit ZPG .

Pretty hard to find anyplace worth living in that isn't more crowded.

I moved here from Santa Monica. I lived 3 blocks from the beach for 28 years and needed to leave because the owner of the building wanted me out so he could fix the place and raise the rent. Mine was a financial decision because Santa Monica apartments were renting for over $3,000 a month and that is now what the rent is on my former apt. No heat, no elevator but location, location, location.

I don't much like what I have found here which in Rogue River is a lack of intelligent life and long drives to get a variety of organic foods. I still can't find mustard greens. Most of what I am used to eating is not available up here. Some of the things are absurdly priced. Watermelon radishes in Santa Monica are a couple of dollars a pound, up here they are almost $6 a pound and they are hard to find. Organic Brussels sprouts are almost $8 a pound.

And so far it's impossible to meet intelligent, compassionate men. The few I've met are of course already married.

But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the trees, the lack of traffic, the rain and friendliness.

The shift to local foods should be fairly painless. Brassicas do well in Southern Oregon, though some species like Brussel sprouts require a growing season that is too long to be practical. Turnips and turnip greens, kale, kohlrabi and cabbage are popular locally grown brassicas. You should have no trouble growing your own mustard greens, and they will probably be healther for you from your back yard. Along with chard and kale, they are part of an excellent winter garden here. You didn't mention rice, but stick with imported rice if you eat much of it. The majority of US grown rice exceeds safe arsenic content. If you are eating brassica toxins for their cancer-preventative properties, consuming a known carcinogen like arsenic is not productive. Daikon radish and mustard greens are staples of Asian cooking, which is what brought rice to mind.

On the up side, you will have a much wider choice of fresh mushrooms, fruits and berries than you were used to in California, much of it growing wild and free for the picking.

As for meeting men, it's a common refrain among women. I tell them to go do something men are interested in, but most never bother.
