Good Evening, I am back to ask yet another question about moving to OR, I have found a place that is willing to rent to me for the summer at what I feel is a reasonable rate so my question would be about links to general info for Florence area such as schools, shopping and such so I can try to figure out as much as possible before the summer. I was very nervous about moving without housing and knowing that it is hard to find someone to rent to you without a job so although I haven't booked the house yet I feel it is the best way to go about moving out to OR. I am going to have about 2 months to try to have everything established ie: employment, schooling and housing because even though I feel the rate is reasonable it is more than I want to spend long term. So maybe a link to resources in the Florence area would be great thanks so much!

Jobs are going to be very limited in Florence. Coastal living is a totally different lifestyle then most of Oregon. It takes a special breed I am told. It certainly isn't for everyone.

This summer home, do you want to visit only during the summer and get seasonal employment, or what exactly are you planning? Are you far from Florence, like would it be a culture shock?

Thank you Hawk J

NWbyNW I currently live in IL, I was out in OR end of March this year and fell in love and decided to move out there. The summer rental would be just a place to start since it seems like most of the rentals are run by agencies which is something totally different from here in il and I know that trying to find housing without having a job lined up when dealing with agency would be difficult. I have been working as bartender for about 14yrs so I would be seeking that kind of employment to start out with. When I was out there with my children we stayed in Lincoln City which was nice but not somewhere I would want to live, Florence on the other hand was my favorite place we had visited when we were there, I was not specifically looking at just Florence, that is just where this rental happened to be at. Maybe it is fate

Dos Florence not have a webpage? Yachats, which is a bit north of Florence, population about 300 people, has a nice webpage. Florence is much larger, so they probably have a webpage.

Oregon tripcheck has web cams if you'd like to take a peek occasionally. Also, if you google webcams on the Oregon coast, many of the hotels and resorts have webcams so you can take a peek at the weather and the ocean. There is a good webcam between Florence and Yachats that shows the coast.

I drive through Florence occasionally. I don't get off the highway, but I see that shopping is adequate for day to day living. It is a fairly short drive to Eugene for more sophisticated shopping.

Long term rentals are sometimes listed with property management companies, but many are listed by their owner. Try Coastal Oregon Craigslist. At the top of the rental ads, you can do a search for Florence.

That's the road web cam I've been watching particularly closely lately with all the slides we've been having in our area.

How old are you? Anyone under 60 is probably going to find Florence boring after a week. It's pretty much a retirement and summer tourist area - there's really not much industry or jobs available there to attract a younger population. The median age of residents is over 59 years old.

As someone already mentioned, it takes a very special breed to be able to live on the Oregon coast. Few people can handle it full-time or for very many years. At least you're going to rent and you should be able to find work as a bartender (at least in the summer). If I were you, I would wait least 3 years before buying any real estate to make sure you can handle the coastal weather and lifestyle.

I could understand it being boring for many 20-somethings, but not for a mom with teenagers. By that time, you're not really interested in night-life. There are so many fine art programs, you can't keep up (although it is often too expensive for us, a family of four). A lot of community programs, a lot of youth sports, and of course, a ton of outdoor activities.

OP, you can go directly to the casino's website for jobs. The most popular bar is The Beachcomber, in old town (for some reason, on the coast, what we would normally think of "downtown" is called old town). I think it is mainly a family affair, but definitely worth a shot for a job with a chance of good tips. DM me for youth sports or other stuff.

I do find it hard to be informed of all the youth programming, but also know that our kids don't go to the school. But communication does seem to be a little off.

If you go to church, let me know which sect, and I may be able to help you with contacts.

So excited to update that after I leave the summer house in Florence I have found a house in Yachats to rent for the school year so I won't have to worry about moving kids during school year! I know it is a small town so with that in mind I will need to travel for work I plan to stay in bartending/waitress when we first come out there so with that in mind, wondering about which nearby towns would be best for me to check first for employment? Thank you in advance
