I am graduating from college in May. I am from Illinois and I know that I do not want to live there for the rest of my life. My boyfriend and I want to move to Oregon, but as I mentioned I am picky when it comes to weather. I do not like rain unless it is occasional. I do not like weather that is consistently gloomy. As for winters I do not mind snow, but I do mind temperature that gets into single digits or the negatives. We are young (22 and 23), but we also are thinking long term and want a community that has lots to offer for young adults as well as families. Any one know the best place for us to begin our new home hunt?

I grew up in Illinois too. Moved to SoCal to attend university. Loved the weather change after years of Illinois summers and winters but now 35 years later am looking forward to Central Oregon. Call me crazy but I'm not fond of 90s in February.

To the OP, maybe Central Oregon would suit you. Check out the Bend sub-forum. Note the employment sitch there though...

The weather you describe is not available in Oregon, at least not any place that has any jobs for newly graduated college students. Would suggest you look at Southern CA, the Southwest, Texas, North Carolina or the Atlanta area.

You wont find the weather you want any place but San Diego, within 10 miles of the coast. Or perhaps Hawaii would suit you. It rains a lot in Hawaii, but it is warm rain.

If you don't mind temperatures that get up to 120 degrees in the summer, you might like Arizona, any city away from the mountains.

You need southern California. Trees require rain. It is just the way it goes so while you might want the beauty of Oregon it comes with the price of regular rain.

Agree with the others, southern California.

Southern California and San Diego is pretty much out of the price range for a couple of early 20-something college grads from IL. You'll be living WAY OUT in a nondescript strip development an hour from town if you can afford anything unless you are independently wealthy or daddy is paying your rent.

If you want lots of sun and a reasonably lively community for young people and outdoor recreation I would suggest Albuquerque. Two other sunny cities to think about would be Salt Lake City and Boise. Or perhaps one of the Colorado cities to the north, although they are getting more expensive.

If you don't mind brutal summer heat and lots of traffic then any of the cities in Texas such as Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Dallas, or Houston would be a good place for two young people to make their starts as the economy is more robust.

Eastern Oregon would be the least-objectionable part of Oregon to you, but what is it that interests you about Oregon at all, given that you have a strong preference for non-Oregon weather?

Yes, exactly this!

Have you been to Oregon? Have you traveled to other parts of the US? There are a lot of places with good job opportunities for recent college grads that aren't rainy or overly cold/snowy and offer recreation and good quality of life for young adults.
