For the information of out of state residents, here is Oregon's minimum wage structure.

I was talking about Oregon minimum wage and was going off a comment from a friend / Portlandian who was really psyched to work at a small business a couple years back, but they were only willing to pay an $8 hr wage- they stayed home! ( and yes that was right here in Portland)...

of course SF is better for the living wage- even the cashiers at Safeway are unionized there and wages are great/ but can't compete with the freakishly high COL....

Oh and a lot of people survive, btw, by living with extended family....

I'll ask again, what part of Texas are you considering? There is an enormous difference between, say, Houston and Wichita Falls, or San Antonio or Lubbock. Huge differences in lifestyle and CoL.

Austin is a special case. Everyone wants to move there and it was poorly prepared for that. It's CoL is high as a result, & even mundane jobs very competitive. You'll find Austin to be the part of Texas most like northern California, in both good and bad ways.
