After a winter of clouds and rain, an Oregon tradition is the first sunburn of the year. It's sunny, the breezes are blowing, and it tops 70 degrees for the first time in months. You take your shirt off and work in the yard, and find out there is plenty of ultraviolet in that sunlight. Ouch.

I roomed with an African guy from Zambia when I was in college. All the rain got to him, so when we had a nice Saturday he went out and played soccer all day long. He ended up with a serious sunburn. It looked like somebody had smeared strawberry juice all over his black skin, which I had always assumed would protect him from sunburn.

I think I read someplace that people who work outside all the time have a lower incidence of skin cancer than the occasional urban sun worshipper. Wear sun block, folks.
