Illegals in Oregon.. (Salem, Roseburg, Marion: violent crime, new home, employment)

I have read and heard many times that Oregon is now getting over-run with the Mexican illegals and that violent crime is quickly on the rise. Is this so?

Oregon is a large agricultural state. Any state like this brings in south of the border illegals to work the orchards & fields. I took a break from claims adjusting for 3 years to do social work and did my job among them. In general, they were very hard working & honest people. Many of them live in “picker’s cabins” that are often single room huts with no amenities. No water, electricity, heat or A/C. Some do, but many do not. So most live in squalor. Granted, they were naturally distrustful of us I can understand that. There were also several activists who taught them welfare fraud & unemployment fraud and it is a thriving “business” among them. Easily in the tens of millions per year in Oregon alone. Ask and I’ll tell you some of the ways it’s done.

More recently Russians have come with promises of jobs only to find it means working under the table jobs for $2-3 per hour in construction (a field they know nothing about) for most builders & subs in the area. They work very long hours for very little pay. If they squawk, it isn’t very pleasant. Putin funnels most of the jobs & money to the communists and this is all they can find. It’s the #1 reason new home construction is so bad and well over 90% of new homes in the area have serious problems.

In Salem we don't have a lot of violent crime, but we do have nuisance crime. Car break-ins are huge here. I think it has absolutely nothing to do with illegals. It has mostly to do with drug users needing money to buy drugs.

I grew up in Illinois, which is a huge agriculture state, and we had plenty of illegals there as well. Illegals exists where jobs are, and agriculture and construction are two huge areas for illegals to work.

I personally don't think we are overrun with illegals. Yes we have crime, but if it is a concern for you, I would talk with a local police department. I think they would set you straight. Crime has a lot to do with drugs.

I live in Alaska and was just curious. I know we supposedly don't have a whole lot of them up here, but who knows.

Might want to do a little homework on why criminals here are considered to have a get out of jail card.We do not prosecute people here because we have no prosecutors and no public defenders,we have reduced the states crime lab,we routinely cut police jobs because we will not pass taxes to support them and jails.We have reduced so many services,they are closing libraries.I live in Lane County,my little town's criminals are the same ones,over and over and over.All are white.

Incarceration and crime are different things. Lots of criminals get arrested, fewer are actually incarcerated. Most jails in most cities and states are at or near capacity. They are filled with the minority citizens that surround that particular area. They provide a basis for the employment of prison guards, social services workers, prison health providers, etc. etc. In some states the incarcerated population provide actual labor revenue for the state. In states and areas with a low (really low) level of minority citizens law enforcement and corrections systems struggle for respect and survival. With all the other fiscal woes that most jurisdictions face you won't see a huge desire to actively put an end to nuisance crimes commited by non-minority race persons.

Alaskapat...What you have heard about the illegal invasion of Oregon is true, regardless of the self-serving statements before this. Illegal gangs have grown to such an extent that Marion County Law Enforcement, school authorities, etc. met a a local high school recently to try to cope with the increasing gangs,drugs, crimes that have been brought into this once quiet community by illegal, south of the border aliens.

Thats so sad. I thought Oregon was different from the rest of the country. I'd hate to see such a beautiful state get torn apart by illegals. I hope something gets done to stop the problem, and fast.

No, every state is pretty much having a massive problem with illegal immigration. Not every area of Oregon has been hit big time. You don't see a lot in places like Central Oregon or Roseburg or on the Coast. They tend to congregate in the agricultural areas although they're starting to infest the urban areas in some places. I live in Salem and the eastern edge of the city is going to pot.

Illegals do bring their own cultural issues, For example, in Mexico there are no strict laws about drunk driving. It's fairly common. Here, it's a crime and people look at drunken people killing or hurting others differently. Also, in Mexico (and may other central american countries), you make money however you can- illegal or otherwise. It's understood one does what they have to to take care of themselves. Here, such lifestyle is not so acceptable. They also, culturally speaking, do not value the rights of women near so much as we do and beating ones wife may be harsh, but there are no real spousal abuse laws as we have. So in that regard there is more crime associated with illegals, but when taken in the light of the difference in cultures we do see it differently.
