HR is pretty good in your areas of question, but it is 'trendy and spendy' and changing from HR 'old-school' (natives / ag) to more wealthy transplants, as has Bend. But the areas are both nice, and in my view, much more desirable than anything near Portland, but to each his own. If you can handle the weather, crowds, traffic, and politics of PDX, it is fine. There are some areas within metro with community identity.
HR has a nice year-round pool, lots of activities for families, good community support.

I might also add it is a very windy place, hence, no outdor tennis courts, very little local bike riding... Housing is very very high and overall cost of living is probably the highest in the state. Depite that, I enjoyed myself there and think it's an OK place to raise a family.

apej6... I answered your question on another of your posts, describing my town which fits your description of THE PERFECT TOWN.
I moved to this town because it was so perfect and still is...... although I'm pushing 70 years old, and really want to move back to Florida for the warm winters. I have thoroughly enjoyed living in s/Oregon for the very, very friendly people and low-stress lifestyle. Look for my other post which gives more details.

Hood River is a great place to raise kids, has plenty of bike riding spots both road and mountain. Pool is great and well taken care of. Schools are fantastic witgh lots of parent involvement. Plenty of things to do and hands down the best place to raise kids. Windy, yes, but is is a world known spot for windsurfing and kite boarding. It would be like not wnating to live in Aspen becuase it snows. It is what it is. Housing can be higer but you will spend more in Portland for the same house.
