Good point. I was thinking that it would be impossible to find any place in Oregon with trees and/or snow for $250k, so living in town would be the only choice. Another option might be Glendale/Hugo, which is within commuting distance to Three Rivers Hospital in Grants Pass. Ashland sees a lot of snow, but you can't buy a dog house in Ashland for $250k.

Yeah not a whole lot of foothill cities that meet the 30 minute criteria and that price point. I wouldn't say Sisters and Bend get a dusting of snow either. They can get serious snow.

I am going to guess that Healthcare is a high priority. The major hospitals are in Portland but your budget isn't big enough for anything near portland.

Salem has a good hospital and you might be able to buy something in Dallas. Dallas is a farm town, next to foithills, easy drive into Salem, easy day trip drive to the coast. North of Dallas is rolling farmland, south is the coast range with forest.

Eugene has a good hospital. Eugene is very crunchy granola. Very nice mountains just east, a couple hours from the coast . Possibly you might get a small old house in Springfield but I am not sure about that.

Bend has a good hospital. Bend is east of the Cascades and is colder and drier with a lot more snow. The only house I know of in your price range is a 70's mobile home on 2 acres that can't be financed, so you would need cash. Median price in Bend is somewhere around $400,000. But you could get something in Prineville. 30 miles to Bend, lower, drier, juniper instead of pine, but mountains and forest not far east or west. Prineville looks like a cowboy town.

Crooked River Ranch is in your price range. 30 miles to Bend, good cascade mountain views. Drier, juniper instead of pine, less snow. Lots of retirees, slower pace of life, HOA maintains a nice golf course, hoa rules are easy.

hey All that responded, I just wanted to thank you for all the cities you suggested, the reference to check out local newspapers and info regarding the lay of the land. This was all really helpful in my searches today.

Oakridge would be our favorite, but is to far from healthcare... Bend scared me when I saw the post of how much snow it can get haha.

In my original post I noted we would like a little snow, this however isn't a must have.. so I'm wondering about wooded areas near rivers, streams or lakes perhaps instead? I'm also not opposed to living in a mobile home, however we wouldn't be happy in a mobile park with a club house etc.

We're just looking for a pretty place to watch the sunset.. what do you all think about going more towards the coast?

Dexter? It's down a bit from Oakridge, right on the lake, and would give you an easier drive. There's also Lowell. Just so you know, though, Oakridge does have a pretty good service that provides transportation to Springfield/Eugene for medical appointments.

Living near lakes and streams means floodplains and flood insurance. Since you are on a tight budget, I wouldn't suggest that.

In answer to your questions.. I've traveled through Oregon a few times and found it to be beautiful! There are several reasons I think I would like it there. The lower cost of living, mild winters and the beauty of the state.

My conundrum is, I don't have time to visit all the areas in the state before I have to move, so I am hopeful to get as much info as possible by researching online. Then it is my intent to fly up for a weekend and look at homes. My budget is 250k, no kids.. just me and the hub who is disabled. I work remotely from home so I won't need to worry about a commute, however I need to be near medical care.

I've been searching areas around Eugune, such as Sweethome and Springfield but am completely unsure of the terrain or views.

My husband would like something as I described in my original post so I'd like to fulfill his wish list the best I can. Any thoughts of specific towns I should focus on would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
You are going to find beautiful views nearly everywhere in Oregon. I think your real limiting factor (aside from your price point) is the "need to be near medical care." What are you talking about when you say medical care? Do you just need a family practitioner in close range, or do you need a clinic with a variety of specialists? Or are we talking about something more specialized, like being near a VA medical clinic or near a university hospital that does research?

If it's the latter, your choices will be much more limited. I think we need more info to really help you narrow things down. You don't have to reveal the particular condition, just the level of medical care that's required.

In Springfield, as you head out 126 East it becomes a gorgeous scenic area called the McKenzie Pass–Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. Homes are very expensive once you're deep into the gorgeousness but if you buy a home around the tip of Thurston it might work. You'd be an easy drive to several hospitals, shopping, etc and a super easy drive to great beauty. Here's an example:

More 'sunsets' and panoramic views are visible from Eastern OR than 'Near the coast' (Rainy / foggy)

Having a view during retirement is very important and nice (When you finally have time to enjoy it, ALL day, everyday...)

Look into Crooked River while in the area. I like that suggestion.

Several retiree friends also enjoy La Pine, OR
