I may be offered a natural resources job in Hines and would move there in the next couple of months.
I am a single male, currently working in AZ (originally from WI, but lived in Winnemucca, NV last year and have lived in a few other states), and am fairly active outdoors.

Are there social things/events around this area?

There is lots of good hiking and hunting. Good bird watching isn't too far away.

Hines is very small, so social activities are probably somewhat limited.

Hines is only 1500 people and Burns is around 3,000. Typically towns that small won't have a singles scene.

I had to Google that town. 2 hours to Bend and 3 to Boise is about as isolated as one can put themselves. I think that would be rough in any situation, married, family or whatever.

No. It is probably the most isolated town (with Burns) in the entire State. As stated above you will have to drive 2 hours to get to a bigger town, Bend. Boise is further. No freeways anywhere near. Lots of range land, and as oregonwoodsmoke mentions good hiking and hunting. This area reminds me more of rural Northern Nevada than the rest of Oregon. However, there is a Safeway and a McDonalds for any pop cultural advantage.

You could hang out at the Apple Peddler.
Just don't eat there.

I'd be interested to know what work a mid-20s professional can get in Burns/Hines.

Digging post holes, herding sheep, auto mechanic. There is a fairly new motel there on the highway and a good chance they are always looking for housekeepers.

There used to be pump monkey jobs, but the politicians in Salem decided that poor counties don't need jobs so there is no longer any need to hire station attendants.

My guess is it's an out door job with the BLM or Forest Service you might like it there. You're probably doing surveys or something. I almost took a job in John Day several years ago but was offered a better job near Klamath Falls. I used to know some people up there but most have moved on with their careers or retired. Keep in mind the area is a bit conservative and it's near the spot of the Bundy stand off. That shouldn't be a problem.
