Default Ashland or Portland?

I currently live in Medford (toward J'ville) and have a son entering high school in the next few years. I've decided I DO NOT want him attending HS in Medford. That leaves Portland, or Ashland.

I'm interested in feedback from all, and have posted the same question in the Portland forum.

One of the things I like about Portland is the fact that it has high school student internship opportunities that just don't exist in Ashland. Plus, it has much more to offer culturally (yes, I know the Shakespeare festival is cultural, too).

On the other hand, it would be a much easier and more convenient for us to move from Medford to Ashland. Plus, I hear Ashland's high school has a good rep for college preparation.

Anyone reading this that moved from Portland to Ashland, or the other way around? I am interested in everyone's feedback and perspectives, both pro and con. Thank you very much!
