Hi,

I've tried searching for info on Grant's Pass, but can't find any forums or blogs specific to the area.

I'm moving to Southern OR in about a year. I've been planning this for 6 years now, (waiting for a daughter to finish school). My best friend lives in Talent, and I've visited Southern OR about twice a year for the past 6 years.

Please share with me your thoughts, good or bad about Grant's Pass. I like the population size, and of course the beautiful views of Grant's Pass. I'm not interested in schools, or shopping. I'm interested in medical care, like the closest, best-rated hospital, crime/safety, activities/clubs for "older" adults (I'll be 52), and best "affordable" neighborhoods. I'd love to live walking distance to downtown. And anything else you can think of that is important to know about Grant's Pass.

Thank you.

Lived there for about a year 30+ years ago liked it okay but due to my job I had to leave. Rent was way cheaper than Medford or Ashland, same for realestate. I'd also check out Rogue River and Eagle Point.

The days of cheap rent in Grants Pass are long gone. Rentals are so rare they are nearly nonexistent. A one room studio apt will run $850/month, if you can find one.

The hospital is Three Rivers, and fairly middle of the road. If you have health insurance you shouldn't have any trouble finding a PCP. Many people go to Portland for tertiary care. I think everybody over 50 in Southern Oregon needs to keep their FireMed paid up. That's an expensive ambulance ride.

The town itself is super. It has a great setting, great restaurants, great recreation, easy access to entertainment venues like Jacksonville and Ashland, and even boasts the last horse track in Oregon. There is a thriving arts community. It's an hour from my house, which is not very convenient. My wife and I looked at moving there, but couldn't afford the real estate.

Stay within the actual city limits, though - Grants Pass has reasonably good services (police, ambulance, fire) but outside the city the Josephine County services are seriously underfunded, even with the last levy.

There are more medical services available in Medford (two larger hospitals, several smaller hospitals, many more specialists).

GP is cool. It has the lowest rental inventory in Oregon or something to that degree. One of those places you will probably have to buy a place in order to get the right area etc. There is a scourge in property crimes so don't leave things careless in sight in your car, probably can be said for anywhere anymore.

I spend a ton of time hopping from Roseburg to GP to Medford to Ashland for work. Ashland is easily the best place in many ways, but probably not all ways depending on the person.

Best of luck finding a good spot. I used to live in Portland for 10 years before living in Southern Oregon. I definitely became a friendlier person living in SO, no joke. It was a learning a experience and one reason I will never live in a metro area again if I can help it!!!
