The Oregon Coast does not have a lot of jobs. Tillamook County is on the coast and would qualify as economically distressed. It's a great area to live if you've got a job and can afford to live there. I don't believe Tillamook itself is pricey, but the seaside communities are expensive.

Tillamook does get flooding pretty much every year or every other year. If there's a period of lots of heavy rain, you can expect the Wilson River to overflow and flood Highway 101 north of downtown.

Tillamook, like many communities on the Coast, is having a difficult time making the transition from a natural resource based economy to a service based economy. The largest employers are the Tillamook Cheese factory (yummy) and Fred Meyer (a local hypermart).

There is still a lot of dairy farming (more cows than ppl in Tillamook County) but there are a lot displaced workers that have lost good paying jobs in the timber industry in exchange for lower paying jobs in the service industries.

Real estate is cheaper in Tillamook compared to most of the rest of the County. Good paying jobs are hard to come by and much of the economy is seasonal, based on the tourist trade. The Tillamook Headlight Herald newspaper has good information about Tillamook county and Tillamook.

Good Luck!

I used to go to Tillamook once a month for a couple years. It is the rainiest city I have ever seen. If you love rain, go there. I would rather pump gas in the Rogue Valley, than have an awesome job in Tillamook.

Tillamook is very sexist and racist. I was stalked there and the police were of little help. Tillamook has a "Good 'Ole Boy's Club" culture.

It also smells like cow poop and the weather usually is cold and wet.

I also would not recommend that you work for the Cheese Factory. They are very corrupt and abusive to employees.

In summary I would warn against moving to Tillamook.
