Hello all. I have just accepted a teaching job in Port Orford and will start on Jan. 2nd. We are going to move the day after Christmas. I already have housing lined up and my wife is from the town. I would just like to hear someone else’s view of the town. Will an outsider from Mississippi be accepted in this town? I mean, after all it is Southern Oregon. So, any thoughts on the town and the people who live there are welcome.
Thanks in advance -Benton

The locals will pick up on your accent but that will fade in time. If someone asks where you are from tell them, they are curious. Depending on the age of your students you could talk about the many dialects in the USA - Boston, Brooklyn come to my mind at the moment. You could also tell them about Mississippians of accomplishment.

One's faith here is regarded as a private matter, anyone who brings it up will be protholizing and resentful if you don't sign up for their program. One person's definition of 'A Christian' may not be yours. Don't take the bait.

Politics too is quicksand, particularly for a teacher. Don't assume any one's political bent.

In a nutshell: discussion of sex, religion and politics should be off limits. In time you may develop close friendships where that won't lead to resentments but I still would keep the conversation light.

...and to the West, as well. A lot Midwesterners have this sterotyped vision of Oregon as a uniform bastion of progressivity. In reality, it's much more like Minnesota -- a mosaic of different political leanings in different areas. Oregon has 5 counties that lean Blue and 31 that lean Red. The farther you get from Portland and Eugene, the closer you'll be to those Confederate migrants.

Yes, and if you looked back a generation or two many Oregonians came from the mid-west. My grandfather immigrated through Minnesota, his sister stayed.

On the other side of my family are ancestors who were Missourians, hardly liberal roots.
