I really think you should consider Yamhill county. There are many small towns within it's confines, and I personally think that Yamhill has some gorgeous terrain. I was thinking you wanted forests for some reason, but if you want to farm/garden you'll probably want to stay in the valley for our good soils.

Carleton and Dayton are also small towns to consider. I think you'd like Aurora (about 900 people or so) in that town. They are pretty strict about building permits there, (so far anyway).

If you want remote and trees that would be Zig Zag, Rhododendron, and Vernonia areas. The only issue I see with those is that they have elevation so it would be hard to garden well. I'm also not sure about the terrain for horses.

I would avoid Donald and Hubbard since they are doing a lot of growth (or had been). St. Paul is also in the valley and might work. Scotts Mills might also work. It is a small community as well.

I agree with dachmom that we are not hateful people, but forums allow people to say things that they wouldn't normally say in person. Sometimes that is good and sometimes it is bad. You'll find this same dynamic when you ask in other states. It is part of the online forum world...

ExNY is on a distinguished road
Hi there, Halen. I'm originally from NY and our family moved out west about seven years ago. I mention that only because your responses to some of my well-meaning fellow Oregonians sound more NY than CA. IOW, perhaps a bit sharp. Lighten up. Just because the dream place you mention with scenery, no population other than horses, BMW repair shops and Michelin Guide-rated restaurants doesn't exist doesn't mean you should take it out on those who tried to inform you.

I am a native Californian, and I am light. I only asked polite questions, then was taken to slaughter. There is nothing sharp about my questions. I only asked about the existence of a place. If my dream place does not exist, fine, say so. Instead of a polite response, I got an attack. When did I “take it out” on anyone or blamed people for Oregon not being "my place"? Wow people, has this not got out of hand? I am in shock of the responses on this thread.

Two hours is not a long time to wait for a response. We live in the beautiful PNW and frankly most of us would rather be outside rather than inside tethered to a computer. Don't get offended, I'm not implying you are tethered to a computer.

I'm sure you can find something you like in Oregon, you may have to change or compromise your standards a little.
I think you will find we are not "hateful people". We are just tired of listening to people who have moved here whine about the "slow pace" and the "rainy, gloomy weather".
Did you ever once ask that whole lot of Californians, who buy big, expensive houses (that the State of Oregon allowed to be built, geeze, I am looking at only 2500 sqft) and drive expensive cars (is a BMW expensive? Compared to what? A heap?) if they truely think they are better than you? I am sure you would be surprised at their answer. I highly doubt they think that at all.

I am so sorry that you are tired of the people who whine about your weather, but I was not one of them. How could I complain? I have not lived there. And I love the rain. We just had two solid months of it, it was the best.

It wasn't your question that most would find offensive, it was the second remark, made after only two hours, that most people would find more than a bit sarcastic and condescending. I found it offensive and I'm a Californian! Even now when it's clear that you've managed to offend more than a few people, you've made no attempt to apologize and are still condemning everyone else. Though you may not have intended any offense, it was clearly taken as such and the rules of civility would indicate that you should at least apologize for the offense. Not for what you said but for how it came out.

We all put our feet in our mouths from time to time but blaming everyone else is not the way to win friends and influence people, anywhere.

This is a message board. Wait a couple days for a response and if no one replies, give it a bump instead of a snide remark. I'm about as opinionated and outspoken (read:rude) as anyone and even I know that much. Whether you know it or not, impatience is viewed by most people as rude and self-centered behavior. It's almost as if you condemned an entire state because no one immediately jumped in and gave you the information you required. A little patience! Most people on these forums are helpful and quite nice. They'll answer your questions on their time, not yours. They are your peers, like it or not, and not your employees. You are after all asking a favor of people who don't owe you anything.

This is an international site. A lot of people 'read' posts, and don't respond. They don't have to. I've responded with a relevant answer to a poster on the Chile forum, for goodness sake.

I agree with Joe_Ryder's last post.

When I first opened your original posting, I found it to be vague. Apparently so did a lot of other people. I also found your second post condescending, and a little funny. Kind of like spoiled child who didn't get what they wanted soon enough. So, I figured 'why bother trying to come up with something for you, if inside of two hours you changed your sites to Washington?'

You are not revealing your innermost self by letting people know exactly what you are looking for. You're right, though, it's no one's business.

Since I now know that horses are a main priority for you, I will tell you this: I have two friends who are 'seriously' into horses. Friend A lives in an area with a 5-acre minimum, within an hour of downtown Portland. They raise gorgeous Arabians, and ride dressage. Several properties in their area have indoor arenas, and greater acreage. They each drive a BMW motor (their babies ), and have earned their IRON BUTT pins. Their 'about town' car is a BMW. I think they might even know of a BMW dealership where they have their autos serviced. Me, I drive a ratty, twelve-year-old Oregon "heap" - can't afford the beemers...

Friend B also shows Arabians. B lives in a suburb of Portland and boards show-quality horses in a nearby county (where there are several "upscale" horse farms). B owns "horse land" in Oregon and Washington. (B is also a builder, and realtor). B is way wealthy, and drives a 10-year old chevy

There is a world-class chef who's very recently opened a small restaurant in a Portland suburb (in my hood!!!). Some 5-star French thing going on...

So, yes, what you finally said you were looking for does exist, and within a very short distance to Portland.

Good luck in your search.

My second remark was not a jab. I just so happened to look into Washington a few moments beforehand and was quite impressed. It was a light-hearted remark; I was excited to look at more of Washington. Did you get that, People, light-hearted remark-not a jab? The fact that it was taken as a flip remark just goes to show how people are these days, always so quick to be nasty. I have nothing to apologize for; most responders accused me of saying something that I did not. So, no apologies are needed from me.

Feet never were in my mouth, but they surely were in the mouths of others. I am not here to win friends and influence people; I came to ask questions. I never blamed anyone for anything, so now you join the club; you are accusing me. You are also accusing me of believing that the people here are my employees - that is an outright lie. I never made demands on anyone. Incidentally, how do you know the peers of a perfect stranger?

Thank you for your response. I would hardly consider my car to be "my baby", it is only a ride to me, but BMW did a custom conversion (they told me that my particular model was the first) for me and I must have it serviced by them and only them.
