Let's try and stick with the original topic, please. Take the national policy discussions over to Politics

Really? If you are chased away from a state by not being able to pump your own gas, your reason to relocate are not that firm. I don't like not being able to do it, and the increase in the cost of gas, but it's not a big deal compared to other factors.
I would think the fact that 207,000 people in the Portland area alone would be a turn off myself.

The absolute stunning beauty (so many different kinds) that the state of Oregon has to offer should overshadow a lot of other things, IMO. (having employment would, of course, be the most important thing).
P.S. I'm driving to Texas next week, so, I am sure I will come back and feel even more adamantly about Oregon's beauty than I do now!

This again? This has come up so many times... somebody plans on moving to Oregon until... oh my gosh... I can't pump my own gas? Forget that! ********* hippie tree-hugging communists!
Sheesh.
I love this law. I get to have somebody else pump my gas for me, and evidently it keeps the state from becoming overpopulated.

figgy should move to whiteaker - fit right in & a gas station nearby to protest at
reality: i think it should be protested that the pumpers are exposed to benzene: no rubber cuppy things catching the vapors like elsewhere (sorry i only know what the gas pumping is like in CA & they have vapor catchers there).

Anyone remember the good ol' days, 25+ years ago, when we had "service" stations in Oregon? There still are the rare few where you can get your windshield washed while filling up, but that's mostly a benefit from days long past. Nowadays, the attendant sticks the nozzle, punches the computer and moves on or stands around until the pump says stop, takes your money and that's it. Not quite the personal service it used to be. My first job, 40 years ago in another state, was pumping gas in the busiest station in town. Eight hours of almost nonstop pumping. Only two of us on duty at a time, three rows of pumps, six lanes and no computers. We never neglected to wash the front windshield and rear window and always asked to check the oil. Some said yes, some no. And all of this for a whopping $1.50/Hr. and no customer waited any longer than we do today. That's why I've always been confused and more than a little upset about why most station owners in Oregon allow employees to stand idly by while waiting for the pump to finish. They are paid for that time, why not put it to good use and do the windows? Are they union and allowed to only pump gas? I know they're not, but you'd think so. It's either that or they just don't care about customers. Maybe we're just a necessary evil.
