Google maps says from Portland to the Idaho border is 6 hours. Are there any areas on this route (I-84) where you'd be likely to encounter traffic, or is it generally very clear and fast?

Thanks.

It's not clear, but traffic moves fast once you get away from Portland. Unless there is ice or one of the frequent heavy wind storms. The wind can be strong enough to cut your gas mileage sharply.

You need to keep a partial eye on the cliffs because there is a herd of wild bighorn sheep that live there and sometimes, if you are lucky, you get to see them.

East of The Dalles, traffic is nearly non-existent except for road work. From about Greshem to The Dalles, it is not terrible. Portland to Greshem is terrible during traffic hours, but is OK any other times (After 7 PM to about 6 AM and from 10 AM to 1 PM). It is never wide open unless it is 2 AM.

The major traffic issues will be on I-5 or 205, whichever one you travel on that's the main problem areas. Once you are on I-84 the traffic diminishes quickly once you cross the Sandy River at Troutdale. The Multnomah Falls area can cause a slowdown, but usually only for a short distance and not a total stoppage. You can usually keep the speed limit through Hood River and the The Dalles. Weather or an accident are the only causes for a significant slowdown after Troutdale. Also keep an eye out for bald eagles along the Colombia, as well as the big horn sheep.

I recall a story about a driver who was ticketed on I-84 in central Oregon. The officer checked a box that stated that it was in "heavy traffic". The driver appealed the ticket. The Judge laughed and found not guilty.

It's pretty clear and fast away from Portland, weather not withstanding.
