Three words: Oregonians In Action (OIA). Most of them are California refugees who are unhappy that Oregon's land development laws aren't as flimsy as California's, and are trying to change the law to allow more suburban sprawl and conversion of farmland to subdivision. California cancer in Oregon.

Salem area is growing a lot. My husband is a builder and as far as I know there are a lot of new developments in the area for luxury homes and good prices that are more attractive to families. If you are looking for a nice area in the town, I would suggest NW Salem.
