Thanks- I'd love to be at Toledo myself- glad of the input from some one who knows!!!
will be vacationing at Newport this coming weekend-

I don't live on the Oregon coast but I vacation there a lot and I do own a home between Brookings and Gold Beach. I bought it because I fell in love with the area and have never been able to get it out of my soul.
I rent out the house which pays the mortgage and all costs. It will, in a few years, be my retirement home.
The cost of living is moderate. Wages are not good and like another poster said, be ready to make adjustments. But it's worth it.
Brookings, Smith River, and all points north are options open to investigation.

Oregon is MY home state and as far as I’m concerned not enough good things are being said about it. Oregon has better roads than any other state I have traveled. No state is more majestic than Oregon. The quality of life is high. The weather is mild and moderate West of the Cascades. There is too much to do about the rain when 38 states get more rain than Oregon. Everyone make it sound like Oregon is a terrible place to live. Employment and I’ll shut up. Oregon is made up of small cities made up of small businesses with a small amount of employees earning a small salary based on a small amount of revenue. It takes money to build prosperity and that is what Oregon needs most. You can easily make a good living in Oregon but few will become wealthy. Oregonians real wealth lies in the state in which they live.

I am moving to Oregon from the Netherlands. I was born and raised on the east coast America. I'm moving to Oregon without knowing if I have a job there. I can work for little money as long as I make enough to survive there. It looks beautiful and from what I've seen the most in this forum are great people with great attitudes.
I could move back to New York and get a big pay job. The smog isn't good for your health, but it creates spectacular sunsets. LOL Yes, I could fit in with the rest of the big pay cattle in the subway. I could pay the pickpocket some of my pay. I would rather have the safety, a little rain and wind and the fellowship of a small town in Oregon.
I am moving to Depot Bay. I've never seen such diversity. Skiing in the back and surfing in the front. I've been in e-mail communication with people there and have had nothing but friendly and helpful responses. The pictures I've seen are beautiful. It's worth it to me to try Oregon. If it works for me, I feel I couldn't ask for more. :-) If it doesn't work, well then at least I tried. I didn't sit and complain about this and that, hoping someone comes knocking on my door with a message from Bill Gates needing my assistance....
See you guys in 2 weeks !!! :-)

The best little secret on the coast is Rockaway Beach. Growing leaps and bounds and nestled between Seaside (which is expensive) and Tillamook (where work is available.....like to milk cows or make cheese?)

I couldn't agree more. I've lived on the east coast from Maine to Florida, and California north & south, and nothing beats Oregon. Even with the 'adjustment' one makes, there can be no finer place to live, as far as I'm concerned.

I live near Brookings. Not the most 'hip' of towns by any stretch of the imagination, but it has everything I need and anything else that I may want is within driving distance. Okay, anywhere from 2 to 4 hours driving distance, but driving distance just the same.

And with the internet... who needs to travel? Anything can be ordered and delivered.

Still, Oregon is not for everyone. In Brookings, the weather can be absolutely beautiful. Hot and sunny. But it's still the northwest, and there are many foggy, cold, rainy and windy days. Any time of year. That's just fine with me!

I think Oregon will continue to grow in population. It's just too nice to keep people from wanting to live here. We all need to deal with how that will impact our quality of life.

Thumbs up Linda

I was born in Chicago, lived there until I was 24 and then moved to San Diego in 1972. I am now awaiting a job transfer with the Post Office to Portland. I think the Oregon coast is absolute paradise. My parents retired to Bandon in 1976 and lived there until 1992 when my dad passed away. I spent most of my vacations with them and absolutely hated to go home to Escondido, CA. I can't wait to leave California and if I could, would prefer to go to the Oregon coast, but my job requires me to work in a big city for now. However, when I retire, it will definitely be on the coast. All the coastal towns are absolutely wonderful, and anyone who lives there is VERY lucky no matter what they do for a living. In 1992 or so they were building a Walmart in North Bend and I was all set to apply for a job there and I stupidly let the person I was dating at the time talk me out of it. I've regretted it ever since. I only had 4 years in my P.O. job then and had nothing to lose by quitting and going to Oregon. Now I have 21 years in and only 3 more years left before I retire, so I might as well stay. Yes, it rains a lot, but the absolute beauty of the Oregon coast more than makes up for it! The quality of life where you live is way more important than making a pile of money, and if I wasn't too old to get a job somewhere else, I'd be going to the coast to live. People who need the hot nightlife can live in the big cities. I'll take the gorgeous scenery of the beaches and the wonderful clean air and the slower pace anytime! As someone mentioned, the seafood is wonderful. Go in June and get the Dungeness Crab....heaven! And you can pick blackberries in August anywhere on the sides of the roads--buckets of them. The Oregon is Heaven on Earth to me!

Default thank you for the positive post

I am moving and that is all there is to it- everything said by the last poster is so true- I am not yet old enough to retire- I will be the working poor no matter where I live and it is my time to live where I want -- before I am to old to enjoy any of it- so while I have the energy to do it- I am going for it-
I don't need the night life- but, feel I need the restoration that liveing at the coast will provide-I am still interested in job leads if any one has any- houseing too-
thanks to all

my opinion as a Californian who has lived in several states --
every place has the good and the bad...
which makes it so difficult for me to make a decision

so, I don't mind hearing both sides of the story. And if Oregonians hate Californians, that's fine too. If I move there, you can't really tell can you (unless there's a big sign on my forehead that I'm not seeing?).
