More likely the cow head came from Carlton Meat Packing. If you cut the head off of a cow, you are faced with the question of what to do with the rest of the cow.

I grew up in the area. Religious people are enough of a minority that if they get involved they take their religion pretty seriously. There were Mennonites next door who ran a dairy. Dairymen don't socialize much, because their job owns them. so I don't know if they were naturally insular or if they just didn't have time. I went to school with some holy rollers who did the speaking in tongues thing. I didn't get to know them much because everything fun was sinful and they didn't let their kids out to have a good time. In the '70s there were quite a few Mormons moving into the area. I don't know what the current religious population is like, but I would bet that now, as then, "indifferent" wins by a good margin.

Historically Oregon has had its share of religious groups like the Shakers. They have long since imploded.

25-30 years ago there was a large migration of "Old Believers", a variety of Russian Orthodox who fled Stalin to China then migrated to the US. They too wore distinctive clothing. Most of that group has moved on as, I heard, they felt that too many of their youth were leaving the group. It is my understanding that many moved to South America.

I agree, the Mennonites (many wear clothing like the Amish, the women wear little net caps) are serious, successful, farmers. Praises to those who choose to run a dairy, it isn't a life I would wish. The largest concentration of Mennonites is around Albany where they also sponsor a very nice continuing care retirement community.

The cow's head at Halloween was doubtless not from any "cult" activity, it sounds much like what some of my high school classmates would pull in the 50s.

Not a cult but definitely different. I went one year and had a lot of fun.

"Once, about 10 years ago a cow head was found in the fountain by the McMinnville library on Halloween. A story published in the News Register stated that they believed it was a cult was responsible from the Dayton area."

Frankly, I'd suspect Linfield College students.

There sure is a cult in McMinnville. I took this video one autumn afternoon. I'm glad they didn't find me. Rachel Maddow sure creeped me out preaching her preacher talk. And I never knew Janet Reno had long red hair at one time.

"More likely the cow head came from Carlton Meat Packing."

Time out: New citified name for the new millenium... Carlton Farms. Same great meat.

Tough work planting the styrofoam plates and getting the plastic wrap rolled out...

That said, some of the best bacon you will ever taste.

LOL other than mormons and jehovas witnesses mcminnvilles a pretty normal valley town. same goes for all the small farm towns around the area. I will say however that there is a cemetary in lafayette where a witch was hung and supposedly cursed the town saying that lafayette would burn to the ground three times.... so far it's burned to the ground twice
