I might just add to those favoring Eugene, that the city of Eugene itself is large enough to have plenty of variety, and still not as large a city as metropolitan cities like Portland or Seattle. (No disrespect meant to either of those cities)

How about Olympia Washington? It's half way in between Seattle and Portland. But if you have friends in Portland it is a great town.
