Maybe you're right about Texans not denying the weather in their state, but I know that people in NM defend the weather. When others say "Oh, but isn't it HOT in New Mexico?!" the NM residents will often respond with something like "It's not that bad. It's not hot like on the East coast--it's dry and it's windy." In fact, there's a thread in the NM forums right now: Yeah, but it's a dry heat!

I think every state has its own "It's really not that bad" story.

Texas Coast?

Hello RG here. Howdy, I live in Texas and also enjoy Oregon and WA and parts of CA.
We try to travel to different parts of the WC each summer. I have generally found the folks I have met in Oregon and WA friendly and positive.

I was wondering about the difference in the "sunlight" between coastal Oregon and coastal Texas (Corpus Christi)? Someone told me I wouldn't enjoy living on Oregon due to the differences?

Thanks

RG

Been on the Oregon coast for 3 weeks now. I've only seen 2-3 cloudy days. Ask any Iowan what seasons they like most, and all will say spring and fall. The two rainiest seasons! Well that is what it is like out here. It is spring then fall and back to spring again. On the 4th I went down to Winchesterbay to see my buddies (a 6 mile drive) I got there and the clouds and fog was rolling in. Couldn't find my friends so I turned around and went back home. Partly cloudy and at least 5 degees warmer. It changes just that fast on the coast. I can't wait for this winter, a jacket, walking on the beach, in the drizzle. Sure beats -20 trying to get the car started, so you can drive to work on the ice at 5am. If this is summer on the coast I LOVE IT! No more sitting inside with the air on. 80 in the summer 45 in the winter. Clouds, rain, I'll live with it.

Interesting. Even after the weather turns the corner in June and there are more sunny days on average than not and lawns are in real danger unless human intervention is undertaken, the issue of Oregon's clouds and rain and lack of sun sparks debate. I have to tell you, I did a little exploring other state threads to see if any others were as weather obsessed as Oregon. My search lead me to the Alaska board. Even the southernmost parts of Alaska sit high enough to make for real sun issues if one was susceptible and the more northern reaches don't get ANY sun at all, day or night, till spring. This I have always known as I have known that it rains a lot in Oregon and Washington. Go look at the Alaska forum right now and see how many threads are about the issue of SAD or lack of winter sun or cold or snow or any aspect of natural phenomenon in the state.

There are many significant differences between the TX and OR coasts, and not just sunlight. The mild summers up here are fantastic - the rest of the year, a lot of clouds and rain blows in to the coast off the Pacific (there's basically no land between the OR coast and Japan, so nothing to break up the weather). That being said, though, the numerous layers of clouds and different shades of grey really do look spectacular. Just pack a raincoat.

It is also much colder at the coast than the TX coast...usually 10-20 degrees colder in the summer than in-state. And there are fewer "beaches" in the traditional sense - more rugged rocky outcroppings etc.

I see it. Thought you were being uneccessarily rough with Tiff until I read her post again. My GF is blind and I am not far from it. So much gets taken for granted. Enjoy that coast.
