Whether Oakridge becomes the next Bend or Ashland, is anyone's guess. That was the opinion, however, of one of Oakridge's most-respected real estate agents who really knows her stuff and that I have dealt with personally.
There are many locals who fear that that is exactly what will happen, but there's no doubt that we need this economic boost, so this is great news as far as most are concerned.

Like it or not, either you have economic growth or you dry up. That has been the truth down through history. The reason my husband and I have been content with living in California is because we live in a small town(now about 3500) in a small county (25,000). Everyone has fought tooth and nail any economic growth, but it happened anyway. Horror of horrors, they just opened a Riteaid. People screamed and yelled about having a drive thru in town. Well, that parking lot hasn't been empty a single moment the doors are unlocked. It's the same in Oakridge, or anywhere else. Untill there are no more babies and we have reverse population, ya can't help it.

Thank you everyone who described the town so well, especially on the first page.
There is a job opening in Westfir that my husband applied for. Could anyone tell me how the attitude toward the Forest Service is? Is the population open to outsiders? We are also a young vegetarian family, so my sons will be in the school system--I don't imagine anyone cares, but I thought I would ask about any preceived attitudes toward vegetarians as well. I figure the close proximity to Eugene might color it one way or another.

I love Oakridge, I was able to visit your town about 12 yrs ago, we went panning and camped (in a little regular tent the old kind !) I liked the little diner also, I hope your town does not become like Sisters or Bend, having lived in Bend years ago and seeing all the developing and all the transplants just ruined its charm. I hope you get some new business as most towns need some, but I hope it keeps its charm.

You're going to want to go to Eugene to do your grocery shopping, but the market here is good enough for when you're in between trips. My father actually gets all of his produce there because he says it is better quality than what he can find in Eugene or Springfield, but then, he doesn't tend to shop at the more alternative places.
It's also a very good place for gardening, and if you don't have a space for that at your home, there are community gardens.
I'm a semi-vegetarian myself; no red meat, just wild Alaskan salmon and chicken every once in awhile. I don't think you'll find any preconceived ideas on that here.
Westfir itself is a gorgeous area and I doubt you'll find any bias against you for being Forest Service.
About outsiders--you might find some of that among some of the old timers. It's rather funny; I was at the counter in one of the local cafes and an older woman started giving me the business for being a newcomer....the waitress informed her that she had known my grandparents and my father all of her life and that I was hardly an outsider. But for the most part, because we haven't had a huge amount of transplants from Cali or elsewhere, people are pretty welcoming.
