Servere Asthmatic info Eugene versus Salem (Portland: environment, for sale, travel)

I am a servere asthmaic that currently lives in Nevada. I originally lived in Washington state growing up and then moved to New Jersey. I did fine there after about a year, however it is way to expensive so it is not a option. I am looking to move to either Salem or Eugene oregon. I have four children, two in highschool and two in middleschool. Both husband and I work in Customer Service call center type work. I need to know between Salem and Eugene, which is the better environment, what the schools are like for special educations students as we have one with a learning disability. We want a quiet neighorhood, with good schools, I need a relatively small in size highschool as the disabled child can not handle large crowds, but want the other highschool student can get around via car for a job or fun activities with out being in a big city. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know, I do know we are moving to Oregon, iv been told the closer I go to the coast the better it would be for my asthma. Connie

My sister is mildly to moderately asthmatic and lives in P-Town currently. She has told me that her asthma is worse at the top end of the Willamette Valley than it was when she was further down the I-5 corridor in Eugene. I don't know if that has to do with the Columbia winds pulling irritants her way as she suspects, or what have you. Her worst symptoms happen when the grass fields are in bloom, and of those there are many. Her second worst symptoms happen during the season when the farmers burn their fields. I am not asthmatic and when I lived in Eugene that was an issue for me as well. I have not lived in Salem so I cannot speak to the air quality of Salem vs. Eugene, but I can speak to the air quality of upper Willamette vs. lower. There is more pollen count in the upper W. By how much I cannot say.

My hubby has asthma, but not severe and he does just fine in Salem. We do have grass seed farms around the Salem area, but we don't see as much of the field burning as they seem to do down south. I've seen it here, but I don't know if Eugene traps it more due to the mountain ranges?

I have an autistic spectrum child and they have special needs classrooms within the schools for those kiddos. I don't know about at the high school level, but I assume it is the same there.

All of the high schools in Salem have healthy populations. Sprague, which gets the best report cards from the state for Salem high schools, has about 1,700 kids. In Salem, I would think you would want to be in the Sprague school district which means south Salem. Crossler Middle and Judson both feed into Sprague High School.

I know there are some well ranked elementary schools in Eugene, but I don't know anything about their middle and high schools. I think we have some Eugenians?? on this forum, who can weigh in for you.

Eugene is a college town so I'm not sure if that's the quite you are looking for. The Ducks are a major college sport attraction. Salem isn't too bad for being the capitol it actually isn't too busy. It's also only and hour of so away from the Portland Airport which helps out on out of state travel.
