There is another way of looking at that - if 3000 people manage to survive there, so can you. It's a question of what you want, what your skills are, and how many resources you have. I moved to Douglas County 13 years ago, which is another hardscrabble area. I have enjoyed a much more pleasant lifestyle here than I could have managed in Marion County, where I was living before.
I have had friends who moved to Burns who did quite well.

Summer Weather in Burns
Hi Lisa,
The summers are very hot in Burns....upper 90's to low 100's. Most people do not have air conditioning (we didn't) because once the sun begins to set, the temp drops dramatically into the 50's. Plus, it's a dry heat

my husband will start his job in August 2008. We are excited to move to Burns. Please tell me more about the area. Everyone seemed so nice on our visits. Burns seems like such a nice community. Everyone has been very nice to us. We like the small town sense of family. The 'middle of now where' part concerns me a little bit, if i might be honest. Open to discussion, please share thoughts.

That's easy. Hot days, cool nights, dry all the time.

Weather in Burns
Hi,
The summer weather is perfect, about 90 on average. Winters can bring a little snow. Fairly dry, evenings in the summer are cool. It is a wonderful, friendly community, very supportive of the schools and has a new hospital. And, within minutes you can be in the forest if you get tired of the desert! Beautiful sunrises and sunsets and no polution. Been here for 30 years and love it!

Weather in Burns
desert_fun,
Maybe when we get there you would have to show me what you have learned in the last 30 years. There will be another article coming in the newspaper soon about the 2 new doctors coming. My husband is one of them. We won't be there until July since he starts work 8/1.

I am sure you all will know about us soon. An article in the Burns Herald will be out soon telling all about one of the new doc's in town.
It does seem like such a close nit and friendly town. We are excited to become a part of a loving community. I look forward to meeting you in town sometime!
Have a great day!
Brandy G.

We lived in Burns for six years and there were no African-Americans living there that we ever saw. We had a child in the public school system and there were no African-American children in the schools either. That was five years ago, so that may have changed.
Burns is a fairly isolated community, with the "new" people moving to the community being mainly government employees, which they resent with a passion.
