I'm somewhat overweight myself alabaster and I can't thank you enough for having the courage to ask this question. I have been sort of curious about it myself as we will be moving to Bend next year, but would never have had the nerve to ask. It is great to know that the folks in Oregon are friendly and non-judgmental.

I will ask since no one else did. What do you concider over weight? I mean, I think I can loose a few pounds or more. Maybe your not really that far off? I'll even give my weight, if that makes you feel better? Just asking because maybe it's not really that much of an issue.

Our experience has been that we have always lost weight in Oregon despite ourselves! While living in other states we both carried around 20 - 30 extra pounds. We think it was due to the food we were eating (we tend to eat what the locals eat, and sadly in many places people still eat what Pacific Northwesterners would consider "junk") as well as a hot, humid climate with little to do outdoors but get sweaty and get attacked by mosquito's.
Since living in Oregon, we seem to eat more food, actually, just bette food as it's so easily available here. We also have more of a desire to get out and do things as the weather and the beauty of everything is so wonderful. Even during the misty winters we find ourselves wanting to get out and go find adventures. We have lived in Oregon twice now and both times we lost weight (about 20 - 30 pounds) without trying. I'm not sure about Bend as far as tolerance as far as weight issues are concerned... but I see all kinds of people in Eugene. People here are very laid-back and have always seemed to welcome you as you are. Even at the local wineries and nicer restaurants... you can stroll in without makeup, flannel shirt, jeans, flip flops, your hair all crazy from being out in the rain or whatever... you're treated the same as everybody else. At least this is our experience. We absolutely love the comfy laid-back feeling that we've found all over Oregon. You get out of this place what you put into it - your attitude and level of respect towards others being the most important things, more than your appearance. |

Well, just thought I would throw in my two-cents...
as an OBESE peson (not just fat), I can honestly say that I have never been treated badly due to weight in Oregon. I lived in Oregon through High School and return at least once a year to visit my mother -- and I have never had an issue. I am from the coast but I have traveled extensively around the state, too. Oregonians do tend to be healthier -- there are a lot of outdoor activities and the quality of life is arguably higher. However, I have found that there is a true "live and let live" mentality that is quite refreshing. Having visited Las Vegas a few times - I would say the mood and personality is much different. I did receive a few hurtful comments there. Let your wife know that I think she will feel much better about herself in Oregon. ![]() |

Alabaster, I have been looking through a lot of states on this to figure out my next move and so far Oregon has definitely got the most welcoming, open armed, "welcome home" vibe to it. Check out forum's in other states, you will see a big difference compared to this forum. It's amazing. If anywhere, this is your place. I live in NY but like I said, I am looking elsewhere. Oregon seems so friendly.
Lastly, don't you want to lose weight for your own well-being and not for the sake of someone else giving you the stink-eye or whispering loud enough for you to hear? Don't worry about what other's think, if you are happy and healthy - life is beautiful. Good luck. I hope Oregon is what you have been looking for! |
