The "State of Jefferson" is indeed, a state of mind, but the mind, of course, is what shapes the nature of social culture. The area shown on the map in red is the area officially proposed to be the 49th State -- Jefferson -- by Gilbert Gable in 1941. The areas shaded in pink are the counties where the prevailing political culture tends to be similar: a world view that promotes the success of the individual over than the success of the community. Libertarian attitudes are prevalent: anti-government, anti-tax, nuclear family isolationism, little value attached to formal education, little value attached to environmental preservation, etc...quite a contrast to what one normally associates with Oregon. Not everyone thinks this way, and not every community is typified by the isolationist mindset -- Ashland is a very progressive community, for instance. There is a historical background as to why the part of western Oregon that historically depended on resource extraction (logging and fishing) has come to be so different from the part of western Oregon that historically depended on agriculture. That's another post for another time.

Hi. I'm new to this site so forgive me if this comes out in some wierd format I'm a Broker with Remax Equity Group so I've gotten to know the areas pretty well. My husband and I also own a Wiser Moving so again lots of area exposure. I would like to tell you about what I've learned here but it's easier to just tell you rather than try to type the information (it's too important). You can visit my website and call me if you'ld like more info. Housing in Ashland is higher than $400K on average. I have an eleven year old and a sixteen year old so I can tell you about the schools (you will definately want to know about this). My web address is File Not Found so please feel free to contact me. I wish you a happy relocation!

That just about sums it up - opinions.

In my opinion, Medford is fine. I'd probably prefer Grants Pass if I was retired, but Medford or Central Point as a family with children just because there is a bit more stuff to do.

I laugh at the drug talk down here.

We moved 3 years ago from Beaverton on Portland's west side, to Ruch near Medford - have a Jacksonville address.

It's no situation real different from up north, and seems more inconsequential in Southern Oregon.

We just bought a house in Beaverton and plan to move back north for business reasons in about 30 days.

For our needs, we found either Medford area or Washington County to be fine to live in and send children to school.

Just wanted to say that I had 2 kids in the Central Point schools, and I hated our school. There's maybe one good elementary school there (May Richardson). If you aren't in that one, don't bother movign to CP. The middle school and high school aren't good either. I'd try for Ashland if you can afford it. They have a really good high school, and a few good elementary schools. Most of my friends opted to send their kids to a bi-lingual program in the Talent school district. If I had it to do over again, I would steer clear of Central Point schools. That city is growing VERY fast, because it's "more affordable", and the schools are WAY overcrowded. They've had a lot of turn over in administration too (not a good sign). Also, and I hope no one takes this wrong, but they built a Mormon Temple in Central Point a hangful of years ago. It's the only temple around, and I think that has attracted many LDS followers, who typically have lots of kids and they typically go to public schools. Just my 2 cents, and something I havent' seen mentioned on this forum before....

Good luck.

My husband is looking at a job in the Medford area. We would be moving from coastal Connecticut just outside of New York City where the schools are great and the people are friendly. What is the best elementary school and middle school in the area. Are the schools better in Ashland or in Medford. The quality of the schools will in large part drive our decision about moving.

I will attending school in Ashland this Fall, from what I read, Ashland is very expensive, where will be more convenient for me to look for a furnished apartment? in Ashland proper or in a nearby small town? I will have transportation. Thank you.

If you're young, you'll definitely want to be IN Ashland. If you're not quite so young, then nearby in Talent would be just fine. Talent is a pretty nice little town.

Live in Ashland and send your younger kids to Sacred Heart in Medford; your high-schoolers to St. Mary's in Medford. Otherwise, stay in CT..
