Was wondering if there are any good coastal towns for raising families. I love the OC and would live anywhere there, but we are in our 30s with 3 young children, so I'm wondering what would be best for them too. Most coastal towns I read about seem to have an older retiring population. Is there a place with younger people (ie: families, lots of kids, etc.)?

Much thanks.

look up my posts regarding Coos Bay, Ive answered this question a few times. My husband and I have been happily raising our 3 kids here along the coast in Coos Bay and love it. I also work w/kids, thats my livelyhood, so i come in daily contact w/kids from 18months-18yrs on a daily basis. bout a hundred of em a week, so I see a good mix. We've got plenty of happy, healthy, well-adjusted kids here in town and roundbouts.
If youre interested, again, check out the posts Ive written on Coos Bay/North Bend, Ive gone over everything from schools and what we think academically of them to after-school activities, from sports to drama. Then, if you want, pm me and id be more than happy to help you out best i can.
Good luck!!
Tiffany

The Oregon Coast isn't really like other coastal areas; it's not the most family-friendly place you'll find near the ocean, sure, and not very developed compared to, say, Southern California. Most of the towns are logging/fishing industry (Waldport, Astoria, Tilamook) or retirement (Florence) or combinations thereof (Newport, Lincoln City.) I spent a fair portion of my childhood in Lincoln City, and I certainly didn't suffer for it, but that was in the 70s when it wasn't as dangerous to be a child. By that, I mean that my parents didn't have a real problem with my riding my bike to the beach without a helmet, playing in the tide pools by myself, and getting back to my bike before the tide came in.

But all that said, if you can stand the weather, I'd have a look at Seaside. It is the closest coastal town to Portland, and has much nicer and less dangerous beaches than most of the coast.

Manzanita or Seaside for the north coast with population of families and less crime / social issues than Astoria.

Hm...I like Astoria, and it's relatively decent, though I think there are a lot fewer things for kids in the 12-18 year old age range to do, and even less for the 18-21 crowds.
it's getting better, but I've raised one to 19, and have two small boys. We live rural, but there is some good daycare and activities for the young ones.
