Default Nice lakes/river areas near Sunriver/Bend

I remember visting some beautiful lakes and/or rivers when vacationing as a kid in Sunriver but can't remember any names or locations. We're going next week and are looking for places to go for the day outside of Sunriver proper. We don't fish or anything- just looking for a pretty spot (preferrably not too crowded) with water access and "beach" to relax and let the kids explore. Somplace with boats or canoes to rent would be a bonus! Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

I just moved to Bend a few weeks ago, so I don't know of many places yet. However, I went to the Newberry Volcanic National Monument on Sunday and explored Paulina Lake. It was very beautiful. We did a little hike around the lake, let our dogs swim, and enjoyed the scenery. We didn't bring bathing suits, but there was plenty of swimming for people too. The bugs were really bad (I think they just hatched), but generally left us alone.

You are probably remembering a drive on the Cascade Lakes Highway (Scenic Byway aka Century Drive) where you can drive from one lake to another. You can get to the road via Sunriver (heading west towards Mt. Bachelor). Some of the lakes that you may recall the names of: Todd, Sparks, Elk, Devils, Hosmer, Cultus, and Crane Prairie Reservoir. The major river in the area is the Deschutes

Here's a description of each lake and its amenities:

Weather predictions for this week - blue skies, mid 80s and gorgeous
