But back to this debate.
I also, personally don't feel West Linn is as beautiful at Lake Oswego. When driving down the streets in Lake Oswego you will see landscaped trees, flowers, statues and newly painted street posts and signs. You don't see that nearly as much in West Linn. You also have the beauty of Oswego Lake and the Willamette River, whereas you only have the Willamette River in West Linn. The fact is, Lake Oswego is built around a lake whereas West Linn is divided into three areas that aren't particularly special.
You can't expect West Linn to be nearly as beautiful as Lake Oswego because Lake Oswego has been very conscious about land-use planning and zoning for decades and West Linn has only become that way recently.
The fact is, Lake Oswego has two top-ranked high schools and junior highs, whereas West Linn only has one of each. Living in Lake Oswego provides you with more choice for you child's education and more opportunities in sports and extra curricular activities.
Furthermore, NatureGirl keeps conveniently leaving out the distance from Portland. This is a big issue if you work in the city (which many do) or enjoy all the events going on in Portland. It takes double the time to enter Portland from West Linn. During rush hour that can be a nightmare!
The bottom line is, Lake Oswego has all the amenities those in West Linn must travel to use. We have them right in our backyard...how nice!

I will admit, WL does have more "run down" areas than LO but if you really drive all through WL, there are some amazing streets, homes with awesome views, and gorgeous lined houses (not mcmansions). I spent a lot of time just exploring when we moved in, and it took my breath away. Not to mention the beautiful homes along the river! I just do not feel people give WL a good enough chance. But yes, LO is more established so of course it will have beautiful neighborhoods! I have gorgeous views of Mt.Hood, Mt. St. Helens, and the territory from my street and home. Can't beat that!!
The commute to Portland from WL is still not bad. 43 is an easy commute, no? Hey, if families are willing to pay a lot more for a home, and the school factor is importnat, then go for it!! I just want to point out the positive's in beautiful WL as well. Trust me, I also love LO, we spend a lot of time there. We love the "RAM's" burgers!!!!

Well glad you had a nice trip and were able to get away. This was a fun thread until it was rudely interupted I must say. Anything else you want to add about LO feel free!! I did forget to mention that WL has one of the biggest parks in Northern Oregon; Mary S. Young. That is very cool.

Thanks for the interesting discussion. If this is an example of a "heated discussion" then it's the sort of mellowness that I have come to expect from Oregonites.
I recently visited the two towns/cities and even though LO seems gorgeous I liked the down to earth qualities of WL better.
