I agree with Dave about Albany, and I'm a Corvallis resident. There are pluses and minuses to both towns, and you have to weigh them all when you are deciding where to live.
Here's another positive about Albany: I have a friend who is a speech therapist. She has worked in both the Corvallis and Albany school districts, and she found that the environment in Albany was much better for Special Ed. She had a lighter case load and was able to spend more quality time with her students.
One more plus for Albany over Corvallis: Although Albany has more paved area than Corvallis, I think Albany does a tremendously better job keeping their green spaces looking nice. The new Riverfront Park in Corvallis (supposedly the public face of Corvallis) is in awful shape. Weeds, dead plants, litter all over. It's disgraceful. The parks in Albany are in much better condition. Heck, even the median strips in Albany are beautiful.

The smell is more hype than anything. Yes, there are days (especially when there is an inversion layer) when you get a bad smell. In the last year I can think of maybe 3 or 4 days when it was really noticeable.
The mill has spent a great deal of money on scrubbers and has significantly reduced emissions...when we moved here 5 1/2 years ago we noticed it...but it was NEVER as bad as people have made it out to be.
I spend a great deal of time in a neighborhood just north of the mill...(Millersburg) and there is always a great deal of concern there too; but having talked to many of the home owners there, it just doesn't make the day to day "hit list" of things they are concerned with.
Just my 2 cents on this persistent non-issue.

RV Parks - Knoxe Butte, Blue Ox
Casinos - you have to travel a little for them (at the coast or south)
Flea markets - not that I'm aware of...sorry.

Looking for some peace
Hi all,
My husband and I are seniors wanting to get out of Tacoma. I was born and raised in Tacoma and it breaks my heart to see what has become of it. I am wondering how bad Leb, Alb, etc could really be. I had heard it was a low crime rate, leave your doors unlocked kind of place. From what I am reading, these towns sound as scary as Tacoma.
Any input?
Thank you.

I wouldn't go so far as to recommend leaving your doors unlocked. That's just common sense. I've lived in North Albany for almost 40 years, and even though there have been a lot of changes in that time, overall it's still a pretty good place to live.
