Default Moving to Coos Bay with Horses...

Hi all, my husband & toddler & I are planning to move to Coos Bay to be close to family again. Problem is I can't find any info about the horse community. My family in CB are not exactly into horses, so they are unfamiliar of what things matter to horse people.

1. I'd like to know of good boarding stables, and the going rates for boarding fees.

2. Also about horseshoers or trimmers in the area, are there many, and what do they charge for trims? (my guys are kept barefoot)

3. Are there any hay suppliers and feed stores in the area or will I be driving inland for feed & supplies? What does hay run in the area? (per bale)

4. Also would like to know about trails allowing horses and are there any horse events besides the summer rodeo?

5. Where is the horse property in the area... I'm sure theres plenty in the county, but I plan on staying very close to town (either Coos Bay or North Bend) Can you keep horses on in town properties as long as the zoning and lot size is adequate?

6. Lastly - I'm moving from fair/dryer weather, are there any health concerns that are important to consider for the horses (vaccines, thrush concerns, grazing on salty grass, etc) Do you have respectable large animal vets! (these are hard to find in my neck of the woods)

Thanks in advance for any information and advice!

I don't believe people keep horses in the city. You'd need to go inland for that. Coquill and Myrtle Point would be more the place for horses.

Along 101 south of Coos Bay? I don't know if that's there anymore. I recently saw a 'For Sale' sign by the front gate.

Hello!
I have answers to just about all your questions, as I live about 7 minutes outside of North Bend, I have a horse and many people have herds of horses out here where I live.

1.) I've heard of several boarding stables, and seen advertisements for them, but don't know much about them other than there are some

2.) as long as I can remember my family has had the same shoer - he is very cool! He charges ten bucks a hoof, and he's helped on more than one occaision on helping us doctor up our horses. As far as I know, we've never had an actual vet out here..

3.) There is a feed supply store in Coos Bay called Coos Head Grange Supply. We get grain, alfalfa pellets ect there. Hay...well good stuff doesn't grow here, so it comes from inland, and watch out for people trying to sell brown crappy straw...I've gotten good green bales for as little as 3 bucks a bale, more often I pay anywhere from 6 or 8, and 12 plus for alfalfa. At Coos Head nice big bales are about 20 bucks, ahh expensive! Better prices at the feed store in Coquille, but I don't go there often.

4.) Hmmm let's see...horsefall beach! they have nice camping spots and trails, and I can't say I've explored very far into them..Ummm I'm having trouble thinking of others, I bet there are tons though. I'll ask mom and get back to you on that, she'll probably know of more. As far as events go I know there are some shows but those are msotly in Coquille I believe

5.) Horse property is EVERYWHERE...I'm pretty sure it's okay to have horses anywhere the lot size is appropriate, yes. But don't quote me on that one as I live out of town - like I said about a 7 minute drive, but most of the space out here is open fields. Myrtle point and coquille have tons of barns and people with horses, even right off the main road in town. Probably because there are amazing, HUGE green open fields all around - dunno if you've been there or not but it's about a 30 minute drive outta Coos Bay.

6.) Ehh I'm actually not too sure about health concerns...my mom's horse who passed away at 33 was healthy til the last day of her life - none of our horses have ever had any health issues in 20 years of living here..Standard vaccines and worming is all we do that I'm aware of. Dunno about vets, I imagine there are some, you could do a search online and find them I bet.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll love it here, many amazing
beaches to explore!
