Cool.
That article oughta be read over by those who keep slamming Coos Bay.
Personally, I LOVE living here! Its a great place to raise kids, make some wonderful friends, and enjoy a laidback beachy kinda life.
Thanks so much for posting that!

Coos Bay is one of the great towns on the coast. It is AUTHENTIC. A wide variety of people live and work there. It doesn't depend on tourists for its survival.

If the tourists don't like the way it looks, they can go to Sisters, one of the most popular but least authentic places in Oregon. Its downtown looks like Disneyland on the cheap - a lot of T-111 siding with batten strips.

i agree Karlsch.....

but whats nice, is there is still some great stuff here for the tourists...like Shore Acres, the viewpoints for the sealions, and other such areas....

But ya, i love it here year round, and neither my husband nor I have jobs that have anything at all to do w/tourism...yet, we're thriving. (well,at least we're doing well enough...lol)

Its always a happy day when you live along the coast.

I can't wait to visit the Oregon Coast... it sounds so atmospheric. Having experienced both Southern Cal beaches and No Cal beaches, I can tell you they are both beautiful but very different. I went to college decades ago in Santa Barbara, where every day was studying in your bikini with a mai tai (seriously). So I'm done with that. I actually prefer the more atmospheric, windswept and wild No Cal beaches, which I suspect have more in common with OR?
So if one were looking for a cool beach town to live in, with nice people, a few good restaurants and maybe some fun places to hear some music, which ones fit the bill?? Someplace like Half Moon Bay, CA if anyone has been there, or Mendocino, CA?

I think Sister's is cute. Was just out there last week for 4 days. I think it's important to have all sorts of towns. Clearly Sister's has codes that create a certain atmosphere and those town residents want that. I don't think we want all of our towns to look alike. Otherwise what's the point of going to see a town that looks just like the one you left? I would think it would look weird to have a town with a "western" atmosphere right on the coast. It is more appropriate for Sisters.

Oregonians have a much more laid back approach to life. People that come from large metros (myself included) take a while to decelerate and get used to the culture here. I don't think we need to start putting down other parts of Oregon in order to defend the coast.

Californians tend to complain about the cookie cutterdom of CA. Me, I'll take all of our small sometimes quirky, individual towns with their own charms any day.

Although there are people who, for various reasons, would like this to be the “If you can’t say something good about Oregon, don’t say anything at all” forum, it isn’t.

I was describing downtown Sisters the way I see it. I didn’t say whether it is good or bad.

Sisters is not an authentic western town. It is a manufactured faux western town. Its whole purpose is to attract tourists, and it attracts a lot of them. It could even be called a tourist trap.

My hat's off to the people of Sisters who did this. They had a plan and it worked. They accomplished what was probably necessary to assure Sisters’ continued success.

I contrasted inauthentic Sisters with authentic Coos Bay (which I much prefer) because they are completely different, not because I dislike Sisters.

theyre both neat places, for totally different reasons, like Karlsch stated....
now can we get back to talking about how great the Oregon beaches are?

hummm....one of my fav. parts about it,....the solitude. No matter what time of year, you can always find SOMEWHERE along our coasts where youre it. I just love that.
oh, and the seafood....ive lived here for more than 5yrs now, and still marvel about getting my crab still pinchin'. LOVE fresh crab!!...

Even though I totally, 100%, agree with Tiffela, I still try and see what may appeal to other people. I would be very unhappy if I had to live in Sisters, because I love the ocean, but I think Sisters is a really cute town and I know it may be other people's heaven.
