We presently live in Medford, OR and we're sick of the growth, pollution and over-crowding. We have spent plenty of weekends in Klamath Falls and we're among those that consider the region to be beautiful. We love that high mountain desert terrain. The Wildlife Refuge is amazing. We saw seven bald eagles last time we were there. So, on to my question... for those living in Klamath Falls, has the town progressed? Do you feel that there is diversity there? We're Liberal in our politics, so will we fit in if we move there? How's the crime and Meth issues? Klamath seems to be improving and it's one of the few Oregon towns that is still affordable. Input please? Thanks!

My wife & I passsed through Klamath Falls last October on our way back to California. We stopped and had lunch in the downtown district. Our impressions were both of disappointment. The town seems runned down, but there is plenty of potential to spruce it up & make it lively. There seems to be a little reconstruction going on. The rest of the town does not excite the senses. The real beauty of the area is outside of town. The high desert is nice, & close to Klamath Lake & alpine country...not to mention it is really close to beautiful Crater Lake NP!

Jank, if you transfer to Klamath Falls, how far are you willing to travel to work? I read what some have said about the high desert. Well, not all of it looks yucky and dry and barren. I'll tell you about what we found. We have horses and purchased several parcels of land-all in the Sprague River (about 35 miles from K. Falls) area that are GORGEOUS. There are several subdivisions in the area that you could buy a couple acre lot for around $10-$20k. You would have to put in a septic and a well before building or putting in a manufactured home. A few of the subdivisions there are rapidly increasing in value as people are building; there's electric and phone on many streets already. The two subdivisions in Sprage River that seem most active in growth are "Klamath Falls Forest Estates" and "Nimrod River Park." For awesome views, a parcel in Nimrod River park off Rim Drive can't be beat, albeit fewer trees. I didn't like too much else about Nimrod River Park except the Rim Drive's spectacular views---and it's close proximity to the tiny town of Sprague River. There are LOTS of houses and farms alraeady in the area. Check it out on Google Earth. There's a teency county park, a library, a couple stores and cafes, a fire dept., AND city water... Always an indication of growth. Most of the trees on the South side of Rim Drive are at the back of the lot, there's a downward slope covered in trees. Deer winter in those trees. Every lot on the south side of Rim had the same thing, very flat, with a slope at the back of the lot with lots of trees. One of my own parcels is on Rim Drive which affords a 360% that takes my breath away. You can see the entire lush Sprague River Valley basin below, including the winding Sprague River. I bought the parcel less than 2 yrs ago, and I can't believe how much they've gone up. I bought the land for investment purposes and am delighted with it. (Can ya tell?? lol) For thick, foresty land, check out Klamath Falls Forest Estates. They are variable in the amount of trees. Some are flat, some have slopes, and some are hillsides. It's really gorgeous. Most of the parcels average around 2.5 acres. Both subdivisions have paved road access, but within the subdivision it's maintained dirt roads. A 4x4 in winter is highly recommended for Klamath Falls Forest Estates dirt roads that may be less well traveled. I spent a very long time in studying the area and demographic trends when I was looking to invest. You'd have to LOVE the country and hate the bustle of the city and even suburbia to want to live there. Hope this helps. Good luck!

thank you
Michelle, thank you for the response. The kind of country you describe is really interesting to me. I appreciate the information. I currently drive 20 miles to work, so I don't mind a bit of a commute. Your land sounds great. I will examine the area. Thanks for the tips.

I am a current resident of Klamath Falls and I love it. It has tons to offer for those who want a relaxed enviroment. It only takes about four hours to get to the coast, 30 minutes to an abundance of lakes and rivers. There is great hunting and fishing. It's not a huge city, and we have a small town attitude. For restaurants we have a decent selection of Italian, Chinese and a few steak houses. I have lived all over the world, but came back to Klamath Falls for one main reason, its great here!

We are very seriously looking at Klamath Falls; Lynnewood or Keno areas (not sure about the private well water situation in Keno...input?) And would appreciate your honesty about the drug/crime problems we have been reading about in the Herald and News. Although, we haven't been to the area, it looks beautiful to us...as we are not in need of gainful employment or night life. Just looking for a peaceful area to enjoy life, hunt and fish. As a resident with insight your input would be most appreciated....Thanks!

I think the city just doesn't care much about how Klamath Falls looks. Many of the native residents are pretty lazy to clean up their yards and leave junk all over the place and let their homes fall apart which adds more to the ugliness. The first time I explored downtown Klamath Falls was at night which hides the ugliness well... so does the snow.
Miss Marple, drug and crime are everywhere in the U.S. Over the last couple years, meth has just started to become a problem. Southern Oregon in general is years behind the rest of the country. The Herald and News seems to make crime more than it really is, so does the police department. If there's a murder (which is pretty rare) miles from Klamath Falls, they'll make it seem like it happened in Klamath Falls and they'll make it to be the most horrific thing to ever happen. I'm sure you have read the public safety reports that list every crime/report in Klamath Falls, it really isn't much. They're just petty crime. As for peaceful, well from my own experience some neighbors don't care about peace and quiet.
