Default Relocation thoughts..Help me!!!

Retired couple who are active cycling, hiking, etc. and who need a quieter lifestyle...love to garden, get involved in community activities would like to retire to Newport ,Oregon...any suggestions? It really kind of scares me to read some of the negative stuff I'm reading about how some people feel about new people resettling in some of the Oregon areas. I have always gotten along with everyone I meet & my husband, too. He & I are older but he plays in a jazz band now & would like to meet others with similiar interests. I cycle & would like to meet people who do that, too. I know we will both come with an open & loving attitude wherever we go. I guess thats the secret. We hope we won't be prejudged when we get there, but will be an accepted addition to wherever we live. What do you think?

These are just some thoughts... Newport. On the coast? Gardening? Cycling? Jazz Band? When we were doing research about Oregon I came across an article where Hillsboro won "Best Place To Live" for retirees by Forbes Magazine ~2005. I can see why, there must be five golf courses that I can spit and hit from my west Hillsboro house rental. There are also many fine roads for cycling and active cycling clubs in the area. We joined one that is just for tandem riders. There is a guy a few doors down from me who plays Hammond B3. I hear him practicing and he is very good. I have seen musicians advertising in Craigslist for people to 'jam' with. I also think the weather inland would work better for gardening though of course people on the coast garden. But, all that aside, the main point I wanted to make is that when we go out and meet people sooner or later they as where we are from. There has never, ever been any negative reaction to our disclosure that we are from New York. Many people have confessed to us that they are from California without a trace of irony, arrogance, or shame. It is what it is and that is how the news would be received. Of much greater importance would be what kind of neighbors you turned out to be, then, maybe if you turned out to fit some stereotype talk might get around to that but it would be after the fact, not before. From what you have said about yourselves I can't see that you will have a problem in Newport... ... or Hillsboro...

You sound like a couple that any community would welcome with open arms. Even those who don't easily invite newcomers would be happy to have the kind of people you describe as an addition.

I have a question for you...did you totally ignore all the positive comments about people who move here? If so, why? If not, why are you so worried about a small minority of big-mouths?
