Property taxes in Oregon
My husband and I are gearing up to move from hot hot hot Redding CA to some lovely coastal Oregon town somewhere in between Brookings and Bandon. We have travelled there many times over the last few years and just love the ocean, the greenery and the people! This has been our dream to get out of the heat and over to the coast and now is the time! Yay! I'm sure I will have many questions, but my first inquiry is about property taxes.
It is common knowledge that Oregon does not have a sales tax, but instead has higher property taxes than CA. Does anybody know what the average tax rate is in Oregon? I'm trying to figure out just how much more we will be paying, and can not find any clear (or simple) answers.
Thanks!

All I know is that I lived in the area over 25 years and I felt the taxes were not that bad and I always thought that California was higher. We now live in Washington and the taxes here are higher than Oregon and we have sales tax to boot. To find out the answer to your question go on multiple listing sites for the area you want to live in and they tell you what the tax is for the house. Hope that helps and if I lived where you do I would run to Oregon and the sooner the better. Best of luck.

There are no easy answers to that question. It depends on the city, and if you are even in the city limits. You pay less if you are only county.

Oregon's property tax system is primarily a rate-based system with a limit on assessed value. Each taxing district has its own permanent tax rate for operating purposes. In addition, they can get voter approval for special assessments, so every place will be a bit different. I think you'd be best off looking at tax information for the towns you are interested in, in the counties where they are located (Curry County and Coos County). You could email the assessors offices in each county and ask for an average. For Curry County (Brookings), I found that the rate is an average of $7.15 per $1,000.

I will look at the MLS listings! Thanks so much for your help!
Where did you live for 25 years and if you could have changed locations at that time would you have and why?
Thanks again!

I lived one year in Ontario and would not again. Lived 16 in Coquille and needed a change and would not again---not saying it is bad just not for me anymore. I lived the rest of the time in Coos Bay and North Bend and would not return as I did not care for the weather and again it is not for me anymore. If I were to move back to Oregon, ( and I doubt I ever would as it is time to move on-- Do not get me wrong it is not a bad place--it is time for a change) I think I would choose maybe Medford or Ashland or Bend----not Eugene due to allergies. Oh, I did live one year in Portland and did not care for it much. Mostly, I would have to live in an area that had good medical care and by that I mean specialties so most of the small towns that I like would be out of the question. That is why I left as I really did not have many options---my husband needed specialty care and driving two hours for that makes not sense for us. Their are alot of great towns in Oregon--just have to fit your needs. Best of luck and if I can be of further help just email me at vnodak@msn.com.The towns between Brookings and Bandon are small. Some are better than others. Just remember you would be very rural and your options are limited. They are however on the most beautiful coast line ever.

Taxes in Oregon
MizzLeslie
When my father moved from Petaluma, California up to Eugene, Oregon he had promised his wife that they go back to Oregon as a promise made to her when they grow old together because that is where she was from.
Oregon. So once they settled there they found out that the property taxes were very very high and that it was time to go back to California
said, my father.
What they found out is that if there is a college or university in the same town or 15 miles within that school from where they live, then you will have to pay these horrible taxes and for them, they had to pay
$10,000.00.
So right away, my father wrote to the Chronicle Newspaper in San Francisco, California, letting the people of San Francisco know about the
taxes in Oregon. A lot of people knew my dad because he was the Grand
Marshall of the St Patrick's Day Parade in 1987 plus was an Irish bar owner there as well.

I would expect the taxes to be the worst of all places in Multnomah County. It's a totally blue county and it had something absurd as something called "county income tax" for a short period.
