My husband put in job transfer request to Albany, or, Lynwood, Wa and Medford. He has just been offered the Medford position. It is an open ended offer, meaning we can move now or in the spring.....

So now we have the big decision to make. We could scurry and give notice on our rental, pack, get things on the boat by lets say mid to end of Oct.

Or we can stay in Hawaii for most of fall and winter and move in early March.

So a few questions:

Is it any harder/easier to find rentals in the fall vs spring? We are thinking we may try living in Medford for 6 months or so that way DH will be close to his job and we have some time to figure out where we really want to live.

Are there plenty of things to do with kids in the fall/winter months? Affordable things?

When does the rainy season began?

So I guess the thing is we could stay here and wait till the spring but at a very high financial cost. We are due for a big rent increase in Dec and our electricity is running .47 cents PKH....ugh.. So we were thinking it might me better financially to just go for it ASAP. And despite trading the warm Maui winter for cold and wet I think it would be a fun time especially for the holidays....

thoughts anyone.....?

My guess is it would be harder to find rentals in the fall due to the college but do not know for sure. Also, do not consider the Seattle area---Washington-- as it is expensive to live here. I think Medford gets some snow in the winter. I know Roseberg does and the winter is colder than on the coast but we use to get snow sometimes and not just rain. Just some thoughts for you and good luck. Good rec area around there for you and the kids---check stats on city data for more info.

There isn't much of a rainy season in Medford so much as a grey season which starts around mid-October or so. It only snows about once or twice a year and that usually melts off the same day or the next day at the latest.

There's no college in Medford so that wouldn't be a factor in the spring/fall rental availability. Someone else might have more of a say about that.

If you bundle up for warmth you can do pretty much any outdoor activity with the kids in winter that you could do any other time of the year.

Good luck!

Their is a big college in Ashland which is a small town and close to Medford so would that make a difference on renting in the fall????

SOU isn't very big and most who attend there rent in Ashland or nearby Talent since Talent's much closer than Medford and also cheaper than Ashland.

congratulations mauigirl,

I hope you find what your looking for.

There are a lot of homes for sale, so i bet you could contact a Real Estate office and they could point you to an empty home that the sellers are willing to rent.

thanks everyone!

Freedom that is a great idea!

We are so excited. I think we have decided to push for the first week of November. We have talking about this for so long I can't believe we are finally moving! And the comfort of having a job lined up is great.

Aloha

A lot of people like that area.

If you have kids, you don't want to be low income, then I think you can keep them entertained with stuff, including a home tailored to some fun things in the house too.

Winter is relatively wet. I found little difference between Beaverton's winter near Portland, and the peak of Medford's winter, the past 3 years when we were there. We are back in Beaverton again for my business.

The college in Ashland is not "big" but it ain't puny either.

The news - muliple stories - say national home sales are up 2% but west USA by up to 10%.

Apparently, Medford and Applegate Valley home prices have bottomed, and many values are available. We even dropped our own purchase price 3 times just to stay within the frame of "going prices".

Odds are, that your best range of options is the present. Doubt a big rush will occur like 4 or 5 years ago, but it's likely that the Medford area will be a premium area nationally for shoppers again since Oregon as a whole, did not get "beat up" much.

The area down there has a "good sort" of folks in general. Ignore the Meth or drug hype. It's sort of a rediculous thing to worry about. A few druggies here and there, but blown out of proportion for day to day living from what we saw.

I was under the impression it was fairly large so I stand corrected. I did however, have a friend that went there and rented in Medford. Glad it is not a problem for you and good luck girl.

Actually, Medford has Rogue Community College (also in Grants Pass) which has really high freshmen attendance this year. It's not huge by any means but it does throttle downtown during rush hour.
