My husband, two kids and I were thinking of moving to Oregon for 1 year for the adventure of it. We'd prefer mountain region, but close to a fairly big city for work and culture. We're not hippies, but we are liberal and are looking for the coolest, hippest place to live in Oregon with laid back attitudes and cultural diversity. We like old houses, mountain living (no developments), not so much wind or rain and good elementary school for the kids (3rd and 6th grade).

Best town to rent a 4 bedroom home?
Mountain living
Good schools
Somewhat close to big town
Lower rainfall and/or wind

Thanks!

Thanks freedom and nature girl. I will definitely look into Bend. From what I've already read it seems like a pretty cool place.

I disagree about Bend - it's South California brought north and mixed with the old "conservative" folks. Your choices are Portland, Corvallis, Eugene, or Ashland. All but Ashland are rainy in winter; Ashland and Portland are somewhat expensive.
