Default Fun things to do in Brookings Oregon

Hi everyone! I am hoping to find someone to answer my question. I am a young female (early twenties) and I will soon be relocating to the Oregon Coast (Brookings). I will be bringing me fiancee with me. I do not know anyone there, I was wondering where the hang out spots are for young people like us? Where would I be able to meet people my age? Any thoughts? I would appreciate any insight you may have for me! Thanks!

Default CoupleCC Fun things to do in Brookings Oregon-REPOST

My Husband and I are moving to Brookings, Oregon next month due to his position. We are relocating from California, so it is quite a change for me. My husband is used to living in smaller areas but I am a true city girl. I am not against moving as we are both pretty laid back people who are not your typical club hoping young couple. We actually enjoy peaceful evenings just cooking dinners together or watching movies and we are excited that we will be surround by Evergreen hills, mountains and the Pacific Ocean rather than the 210 and 110 freeway. However, occasionally we do like to dress up and take a night out on the town-so to speak. As far as my research is concerned. I only show outdoor recreation, which is great but at times we do like to do other things besides hiking and walking our puppies. I cannot find any sort of nightlife activities for younger people? Is that because there isnt any? If So, do any locals have any advice for a young girl trying to keep an open mind about her new surroundings. I guess I could always pick up a hobby.

So yes I have the same concern as COUPLE CC!!

Default Hello couplecc!!

Ok CoupleCC I guess I spoke too soon, I did some tedious research and it seems there are quite a few places to hang out in Brookings, here are a few I found:

1. Sporthaven Inn Restaurant & Lounge 16372 Lower Harbor Road Brookings, OR
2. Flying Gull Restaurant & Lounge 101 North Brookings, OR
3. Hideaway 16261 Highway 101 South Brookings, OR
4. 101 Tavern 98141 West Benham Lane Brookings, OR
5. Onion Grill Steak & Seafood 835 Chetco Avenue Brookings, OR
6. Bank Tavern 100 West First Street Smith River, CA (17 minutes from Brookings)
7. Surfside Grill & Brewery 400 Front Street Crescent City, CA (33 mins from Brookings, OR)
8. Tsunami Sports Bar & Grill 760 L Street Crescent City, CA
9. Ambrosia Grill 1270 Front Street Crescent City, CA

The Hideaway, Number "3" seems to be the only one listed as a nightclub and it seems people perform there as well. Not sure what the scene is like as I will just be moving there myself.

Hope this helps even if it didnt come from someone already living there..LOL

Default Ummm ...

If you people are like moving here sight unseen, consider that Brookings is the retiree community of the Brookings - Smith River - Crescent City area.

As to your list:
1. Sporthaven Inn Restaurant & Lounge 16372 Lower Harbor Road Brookings, OR -- a skanky bar with bar bands
2. Flying Gull Restaurant & Lounge 101 North Brookings, OR -- for old folks
3. Hideaway 16261 Highway 101 South Brookings, OR -- the classiest place on this list -- the only nightclub
4. 101 Tavern 98141 West Benham Lane Brookings, OR -- a redneck tavern
5. Onion Grill Steak & Seafood 835 Chetco Avenue Brookings, OR -- a restaurant
6. Bank Tavern 100 West First Street Smith River, CA (17 minutes from Brookings) -- a biker bar
7. Surfside Grill & Brewery 400 Front Street Crescent City, CA (33 mins from Brookings, OR) -- out of business
8. Tsunami Sports Bar & Grill 760 L Street Crescent City, CA -- a low-end sports bar
9. Ambrosia Grill 1270 Front Street Crescent City, CA -- a restaurant

Small towns without colleges in isolated rural areas are not places one can move to and expect to be entertained, unless you are content with watching whales and hugging trees.

Don't get me wrong, I chose to live here when I was 28 and have no regrets, but if you need external stimulation this ain't the place for you, since living in a town where one can shoot a bullet down Main St (Chetco Blvd.) after dark and not hit anyone is a bit lacking in that department.

Good hiking trail can be roughly divided into inland hikes and coast hikes. It all depends on how far you want to drive.

Coast Hikes

The Oregon Coast Trail runs more or less the entire length of the coast. The Samuel Boardman corridor is arguably the best part of the coast trail and starts just north of Brookings. A lot of people can walk from their homes to Harris Beach State Park where there is a nice loop connected by a walk on the beach. Some of the other good hikes along the Coast Trail within 15 miles of Brookings include:

-Indian Sands to Thomas Creek Bridge
-Thunder Rock Cove to Secret Beach (Miner Creek)
-House Rock to Whaleshead Viewpoint
-Lone Ranch to House Rock
-Pistol River to Cape Sebastian

(these are all just different short segments of the Oregon Coast Trail. More coastal hiking opportunities are to be found farther north between Gold Beach and Port Orford).

Other excellent hiking opportunities abound 30-60 min. away along the Redwood Coast of northern California. Notable among them is the hike from Prairie Creek Redwoods to the Fern Grotto.

Inland Hikes

Inland hikes can be divided into 5 geographic categories

1. Chetco River Valley
2. Winchuck River Valley
3. Rogue River Valley (a major hike accessed from Gold Beach)
4. Kalmiopsis Wilderness (not far as the crow flies, but most trailheads take over an hour to access and require a durable vehicle.
5. Smith River Recreation Area (Hwy 199. Del Norte Co., California)

Additional hikes into the Siskiyou Mts. can be accessed from the Cave Junction area on the eastern side of the Kalmiopsis.

Several groups such as Sierra Club and Sole Pursuits organize group hikes. There are email batch lists you can sign up for to be notified of these outings.

There are several good organizations in Brookings. The Brookings-Harbor-Redshirts for one. We send packages to to troops serving out of country and also have fun and dancing at the VooDoo Lounge on Friday evenings when there is live music in the old blues tradition. Brookings is definately NOT a dress up town.

The Elks Club have cards, pool and darts. The senior center has card games. There is a casino just across the border (California) about 20 minutes from Brookings.
