Good hiking trail can be roughly divided into
inland hikes and
coast hikes. It all depends on how far you want to drive.
Coast Hikes
The Oregon Coast Trail runs more or less the entire length of the coast. The Samuel Boardman corridor is arguably the best part of the coast trail and starts just north of Brookings. A lot of people can walk from their homes to Harris Beach State Park where there is a nice loop connected by a walk on the beach. Some of the other good hikes along the Coast Trail within 15 miles of Brookings include:
-Indian Sands to Thomas Creek Bridge
-Thunder Rock Cove to Secret Beach (Miner Creek)
-House Rock to Whaleshead Viewpoint
-Lone Ranch to House Rock
-Pistol River to Cape Sebastian
(these are all just different short segments of the Oregon Coast Trail. More coastal hiking opportunities are to be found farther north between Gold Beach and Port Orford).
Other excellent hiking opportunities abound 30-60 min. away along the Redwood Coast of northern California. Notable among them is the hike from Prairie Creek Redwoods to the Fern Grotto.
Inland Hikes
Inland hikes can be divided into 5 geographic categories
1. Chetco River Valley
2. Winchuck River Valley
3. Rogue River Valley (a major hike accessed from Gold Beach)
4. Kalmiopsis Wilderness (not far as the crow flies, but most trailheads take over an hour to access and require a durable vehicle.
5. Smith River Recreation Area (Hwy 199. Del Norte Co., California)
Additional hikes into the Siskiyou Mts. can be accessed from the Cave Junction area on the eastern side of the Kalmiopsis.
Several groups such as Sierra Club and Sole Pursuits organize group hikes. There are email batch lists you can sign up for to be notified of these outings.
