I may be moving to Salem, Oregon, soon. I currently live in Houston, Texas. I'd really appreciate it if someone could tell me their experiences of living in Salem, specifically in regard to:
1. Things to do (entertainment) for people in their 20's and 30's 2. Cost of living 3. Job market for college-educated people 4. The experiences of African Americans and interracial couples living in Salem, since my boyfriend will be coming with me; he's black and I'm white. Thanks! |

We just spent a week in Portland/Salem/Corvallis. I am Caucasian and my husband is Black/Hispanic. We took our biracial son with us. I can honestly tell you I never felt any kind of negativity from our racial makeup and in fact, saw many interracial couples in all three places. Spent some time talking with a young AA man in Corvallis (where there is not a lot of diversity) and he told us that he grew up there and never felt race was an issue at all. Plans on staying there to raise his family. We actually felt more comfortable in Oregon than in many other places we've been, although it really is a nearly white state...Kim

Thanks for your replies, Kim, "Ownahome" and "Oregon Mom". I appreciate it.
It turns out that I did not take the job I was considering in Salem, so I won't be moving there for now. But I still hope to move to Oregon sometime in the near future! |
