Sutherlin, Need info please
Would anyone like to comment on Sutherlin in terms of if it's a nice place to live, good things, bad things etc.? I'm still looking for land to purchase in the Roseburg area and taking a look at Sutherlin as well. Any info on what other areas within the greater Roseburg area would be nice places to get that country feel without going to far out. Also what are the people like, what is the town like, shopping? Proximity to other things etc. Anything at all ... thanks!

Sutherlin had a bad reputation several years ago, but has really turned it around in the last decade. They are one of the fastest growing towns in Douglas County, but they still have a small town feel. There is not a huge amount of shopping opportunities in Sutherlin, but you are only 15-20 min. away from Roseburg. There is a Bi-Mart, Rays Foods, and several great resale shops. They have some fabulous Mexican restaurants and my personal favorite, Pedotti's (an Italian place). The East side is fine and is close to the schools and Cooper Creek Reservoir, but it is far from the freeway and the speed limit is so slow through town that it takes awhile. The west side is close to the freeway and has several nice new developements along with a golf course. The west side of the freeway has some beautiful places along the way towards the coast. You are looking at about an hour drive to Eugene and about 1 1/2 to the coast.

This area is pretty great actually. The weather is the best i've seen in Oregon really; lived here since 1991. Hilly terrain and close to everything bigger than itself. Not much at all for jobs here right now but, when the economy turns around it will thrive again with new Murphy laminated beam plant facility will be going hard. Probably alot of environmental (this is Oregon) requirements holding this town of about 7000 back. Water rates are an issue lately because the city re-made the rate schedule, alot of folks are paying twice what they have been last year. The city is allright for having water, but it is a warm place in the summertime. Things are great when it puts snow down in the mountains when it should, but go a couple of years without and people are reminded of the sometimes arid climate stretches and worry for the future. The town has been growing fairly rapidly in the past 12 years or so. It really needs and deserves to have a big box store come in to help cinch the future, but Roseburg seems to get all of the attention with that.
Traffic moves allright through town on Central Ave. but it's the real only way to get from one side of town to the other and speed is low 20 and 30 mph through town because of all the business' along the route.
It's worth checking out anyway. Lots of happy people in this community.

That's all great info, thank you! I just arrived in Oregon the beginning of October and have been staying at a friend's place in Dallas, just outside Salem. I'm still wanting to be near Roseburg so I'm looking at a home for rent in Sutherlin and went to see it yesterday. I think it will be fine temporarily until I find the land I want to buy. Thanks for the input! I also drove through Oakland yesterday. What a cute little town!

Oakland is historic/spendy for what you can get, h2o is particularly very expensive thereWay more so than Sutherlin.
Sutherlin is still a great place to buy or start out searching. Buying a place at these times may be the smartest move you make too; if you're finances are not out of line. Look all along on Fourth Street that I live on for a rental or a purchase. Nice neighborhoods East of the high school!
Later.
