Salem, anyone?
I really wanted to move to Eugene, but looks like I may have to settle for Salem, because of work.........UGH!
Can anyone tell me about Salem! I am extremely interested in road biking, in town and out in the country, can I get the same from Salem, I can in Eugene? And is the weather about the same? OR should I just go for Portland? or bust? LOL

Eugene is the bicycle capital of the world with more bike path miles per capita than anywhere. Salem, not so much -although it does have it's charms too.

Been there done that
Yes it sounds like Eugene would be ideal for an avid cyclist. Salem is ok depending on your needs. I've lived in Portland, Corvallis, Salem and Eugene and Salem is dead last on my places I enjoyed living. However its also cheap so you'll be able to afford a decent house/apartment there. I suggest living in the very south end of town. . .
The weather is pretty much the same in the whole Willamette Valley. You'll love this climate if you are from WI.

We live in Salem right now and are getting ready to relocate to NC. I would not recommend biking in town but along the river there are quite a few trails and such. If you are thinking of living in town I would go with S. Salem (that is where we live) or West Salem (on the other side of the river) Stay away from anything that says NE in the address. I would say the weather is about the same but S. Salem and West Salem are a higher elevation and there is a chance you will get some snow in the winter...but only a few inches and sometimes nothing.
Salem is not as cheap as it once was. Also, the traffic is getting worse but I guess that would depend on where you are coming from. If you are looking at towns near salem I would go with Silverton, Dallas, Stayton, Independance. (In that order) Silverton is really nice and everyone that lives there is nice. It is close to Salem (with more than one way to get there) and close to Silverfalls State park. That park has alot of really great trails.

As someone who has to move to the Salem area early next year, could you tell me what's up with Sublimity? Just starting to narrow our search, and Silverton looks promising, but my husband and I were intrigued with what's going on in that tiny town of Sublimity. Lots of upscale development going on, with not much apparent economy to support. Is it the upscale housing for Stayton or something? Just curious....
