Default Is there another Portland in the east?

I moved to Portland from Michigan 6 years ago. I love everything about this city, but I'm looking for a place to live closer to my family (who are spread out between Michigan and Florida). Has anyone experienced anyplace similar to Portland... or a fairly liberal, progressive, beautiful place to live back east?

Have you looked into Burlington, VT? It may fit the bill for you. I've also heard good things about Madison, WI, although I wouldn't consider it the east coast.

Downtown Madison is something to check into. Try Portland, Maine or Door County, WI.

Check out Portland ME. I was originally going to post that as a joke about the thread title but reading what you're looking for, it seems Portland ME fits the bill. It's a great city, not too big, not too small, and the coast of Maine is some of the prettiest area in this country. Close to Boston, mountains, etc. If I were to move anywhere else in New England it would be there.
