Coos Bay
Does anyone know about Coos Bay? Is rent affordable? Does it have a high crime rate?

Bay Area
I live close to Coos Bay but not quite in the city. The crime rate for Coos Bay is slightly above average. North Bend is located just above Coos Bay and the crime rate there is below average. The Bay area is a nice palce to live with plenty of services and a mall. Plus you get a nice bay view while you are downtown.
I really don't know much about rentals here except there doesn't seem to be enough places to rent to satisfy the people who want to rent.

You can find outmore about rentals by looking at the ads in the local newspaper. Just type in The World newspaper into a search engine and that should bring you to the site.
Now I've got to say it's been a beautiful day here on the coast at leaast until the clouds starting coming in about 4:15 p.m. The summer and fall weather is just about perfect here.

Thanks, but what crime seems to be the greatest? Is it pretty safe overall?

crime
it's a pretty safe comminty over all. I mean a person doesn't have to worry about going out and about the town.
The most common crime it seems to me is theft. The stores have problems with people stealing stuff. Once in a while the police pull over a car where someone turns out to be high and has dope in the car. These may or may not be local people. Highway 101 runs through downtown so we get all kinds of people traveling by here.
If you decide to move here I'd stay out of the Empire area of Coos Bay. There seems to be a lots more crime there.
Hey you've got stars by this thread or am I the only one seeing stars?

kinda depends on what you feel is affordable rent. For most people moving up from California, the rent is unbelievably cheap. For my relatives from small town Idaho, its spendy. You can get a 3bdrm house for about 800.00-1100. Keep in mind if you have pets, most will NOT allow them. especially dogs. We did find a 3bdrm duplex that allowed a small dog and was very very small (about 700sqft) w/no appliences, curtains/screens, and had old military linolium floors throughout that only ran us 550.00month. ]You can also look into the Southcoast Shopper as well, sometimes they have places for rent.
- jmo, it seems like there is a lot of drug probs here, mainly meth. Course, it could be that this is small town so it just seems to stand out more. PD response it good and they work hard.

About Coos Bay
I'd say if you were looking to rent, you wouldn't have any problem finding a place. Seems to me like most of Coos Bay Proper is rental property. As for crime, I'd say as long as you can park inside a garage at night and keep your vehicle off the street during the late night hours, you'll be OK. Seems like there is a lot of property damage during the late night and early morning hours. What's nice about the Bay Area is it consists of several small communities grouped together so something for everyone. You just have to know where to go (or you can ask us).

How diverse is Coos Bay? I was actually in Gold Beach 2 weeks ago, and didn't see many people of different cultures. Just wondering because I LOVE the area,

The stats from the year 2000 show Coos Bay as 88.5% white with the next most common race being the Indians. The Coquille Indian Tribe plays big part of the Bay area. They own land and the Casino. However we have a lot of new people moving in and it is growing into a more diverse community. There are lots of Baby boomers and retired people moving in.
