My family and I have just moved to Ashland from SoCal. We chose Ashland for all the usual reasons - lovely climate with four distinct seasons, cultural oportunities with five theaters and multiple art galleries etc., outdoor beauty and accessibility, lower COL than California. Downside is - aging housing stock + limited development + large demand = rising house prices, somewhat cut off (I5 and Medford airport both susceptible to weather problems). You will find most agencies reporting on desirability for retirement will put Ashland in the fop 5 - this is driving demand, especially since babyboomers are just starting to make that move.
