We just returned from spending three days in Bandon. We took the coastal road south through Brookings to get back to Ashland. We had three perfect, lovely days. The weather here is lovely too at the moment but I'm wondering why we don't live at the coast.

Please give me the full, real story of living at the coast. Which towns are 'upscale' and 'downscale'? What is the weather like in, say, May and June? When does it start to get windy? Does the fog hang around all summer? Which is the liveliest town (not meaning nightlife, just shopping, etc.). Medical care? Airports?

I can still smell the sea breezes on the clothes I just unpacked. I want to hear the seagulls again and watch the harbor seals try to sneak into people's crab traps. The Oregon coast has the most! (Terrible restaurants though....).

Gimme the scoop, please, friends!

Just found your post, about 20 minutes after telling my wife that a drive to the beach would have been handy this weekend.

Few people from outside Oregon realize that cold January weather in Oregon, often means clear days.

hehe, my kids spent the day outside wearing capris and tshirts playing in the yard.

well, i live here in Coos Bay, and to be honest, its been often described as downtrodden and ugly. And in parts, that is true! BUT, not all areas. Just like anywhere else in any other town in America. I love living here. I would HIGHLY recommend you either have a job lined up BEFORE moving here, or have enough to live on w/o a job, because believe me, they are hard to come by right now! Lots of folks hurting. BUT, lots of folks still working too, (myself and husband included, thank goodness!!!)
we have pretty mild weather for the most part. But it truly can change from moment to moment. And definatly week to week. Last spring, one weekend, my husband got a sunburn during a soccer game, the next weekend, it snowed. Go figure. Snow isnt common here though. We do get fog, more if youre right on the bay/beach though, you can be in a literal fogbank on the bay, and clear blue skies a mile inland. We lived on the bay for awhile, and while we did get more fog/wind than inland, it wasnt anything unbearable. Typically burned off by mid-morning. And the wind wasnt terrible. Just enough to be annoying on those good hair days! lol It can be misty in the morning, then sunny til noon, a shower off and on for an hour, then overcast but no rain til evening which then you might get clear skies. You can have days and day and days on end where it doesnt rain a drop, then suddenly, 2 days of mist/rain/shower/mist/drizzle/rain/hail/mist. We've had our plants die off because there was no rain for so long, but nothing has ever floated off due to over-rain. We've been through a few windstorms, but the worst damage we had was our gutterspout came flying off and ended up in the neighbors yard. (darn it!) We have an airport, and a very good hospital. Its not terrific for shopping, when i want to really do some good shopping, i head up to Lincoln City for the outlet malls. but we've got some of the standards, (safeway/albertsons/biMart/SuperWalMart/fredMeyers/Staples/stuff like that), plus some specialty stores.

The beach has been just incredible the last few days. Almost dream-like and magical. I've been walking on the beach every day and feeling so lucky to be able to live in such a spectacular place.

That is another GREAT thing about our beautiful and FREE beaches. They are never crowded. HEAVEN!!
I thought all beaches were free? It is a beautiful beach. Which one is this exactly?
Do they allow clamming at this beach?
