When did I say I had problems with liberals as neighbors? what have you been reading?
Old people, dogs, kids? where that come from?
I live near Hollywood, hardly conservative. Although I do want to move, it is not due to any political surroundings nor is that any factor for choosing my next place to live.

Meh. Portland has one of the highest concentrations of college educated people in the US. I'd say that you will find the absolute highest tolerance among people who have gone through the rigorous, multiethnic & multi-point of viewed academic environment...
Considering I have never even remotely heard of a liberal blowing up an airplane or chopping off a conservative's head with an ax, why do I get this feeling of fear towards "the liberals" is itself founded in, ironically, the intolerance that is being directed at 'the lefties?'
Perhaps a good, long stare in the mirror might be in order.

Why is that when a left/right discussion comes up, someone invariably attacks FOX NEWS? It is but one, the only one network with numerous conservatives on it. There's probably a couple on CNN, one on MSNBC & a few on FOX. I find this hilarious.
A broad minded person wouldn't stereotype like this. Not a good example from a so called highest concentration of a college educated group. Isn't that the purpose of college? If you disagree with the content, as the broad and multi-facted mind, woundn't you find it to be, at the vey least, a simple viewpoint you disagree and a point for discussion instead of making accusations of FOXNEWS and conservatices and such & such? I'm sure thats what those opposed to CNN & MSNBC had to endure all this time.
Yes, we all need a mirror from time to time.
As far as college educated=rigorous multi-stuff? I've studied @ 2 universites in 2 continents and so has my wife and although possible, what I've experienced is a gathering & perpetuating an advancement of a particular group-think mentality & at times suppression of the opposing view. Further, certain ideologies shoved down underclassmate's rather impressionable minds by upperclassmates & teachers of the same ideas. I've seen it from both side but you can guess what side is more prevalent in colleges these days.
Put into personal & local experiences in Socal, I've seen religious clicks "shunning" peeple or giving guilt treatments. I've also seen, from the more radical sides, vandalism & downright threats and personal attacks. It is much easier being a Lib in OC than it is to be a red in Hollywood. Just look @ Chuck Norris

This is a highly amusing thread. Underscores the need for a better educational system in the US.

Americans do seem to have lost the ability to see both sides of issues in the past decade. As a slightly-left-leaning moderate, I can see the single-mindedness and inability to grasp the full picture of both sides of the political spectrum. Many problems are solvable with reason and compromise. But I am starting to believe that the oligarchy that runs this country is doing what it can to create divisiveness because democracy is a challenge to their power. As long as we continue to fight over solvable issues by holding extreme positions, we will vote for the people that put on a charade of supporting extreme positions. In reality, they are just saying whatever they need to say to stay in power; and they're accomplishing that goal. I think this great experiment in democracy has ultimately failed. Oligarchy has won again.

Great post!
I might disagree with it being a oligarchy. With the sad state of our democratic process as of now, I believe someone will come along who can reverse this.

It definitely feels like we've become an oligarchy (a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes) given the 'sad state of our democracy.' While I'm usually an optimist, it is hard to believe that someone can 'suddenly' come along and reverse this situation, given the dire situation of our national debt of $8.8-TRILLION, something that will take decades if not a century and generations to dig out of it, if digging out is even possible. Add that to the global proliferation of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, overpopulation, global warming, degradation of our enviroment, and the steady decline of civility and respect of humans for one another and the question becomes not 'if' but 'when'.....
Bang! Time's up.
But of immediate importance...This thread will probably be pulled if it doesn't return to an "Oregonian" theme. With that in mind, how about those DUCKS?
